I lead a team of seven web developers, programmers and database administrators at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division. Our team maintains over twenty in-house web applications written in Django, Ruby on Rails and PHP. Also, we maintain over a hundred other backend scripts written in Bash, Perl, and Python. I work with the team to architect solutions that meet the functional and security requirements of our NASA customer. I am also the lead developer for the NAS Big Data team which is tasked with enabling NASA scientists to share their datasets with other NASA employees, universities, private industry and/or the general public.

Worked on a number of high visibility web applications and backend scripts written in Perl, Python, Ruby on Rails and Django. I collaborated closely with the NASA customer to build solutions to achieve the goals of the NASA mission.

PlayHaven is a real-time marketing and monetization platform with a focus on mobile gaming. They help mobile app developers make more money. Some of the fun things I got to work on included: - Managed and built out Amazon EC2 systems, including MySQL servers with large Amazon EBS volumes with software RAID for increased IO performance - Developed scripts using Percona Tools to backup MySQL databases and store in Amazon S3 without downtime - Maintained and developed Chef recipes for both EC2 and Physical hardware - On-Call rotation for 24/7 systems - Setup Jenkins build servers (multiple OS X and Linux slaves) for automated testing on Git commits for Python and iOS based projects

Following a proven track record as a system administrator and web developer, I joined the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) IT Security team. I quickly took over system scanning of all NAS infrastructure using Nessus and Foundstone, and working with system owners to take corrective actions. With my wide depth of knowledge of various programming languages I am called on to review and make recommendations to harden external web applications. I also have the opportunity to work on some very amazing and innovative projects with my team. Some of the highlights include: Created ReSTful client server framework written in Python to mine host information. The client runs on Redhat, Gentoo, CentOS and OS X and is deployed on over 500 hosts. It gathers package info, services and verifies compliance with the NAS’ moderate security plan. The framework’s Rails front end alerts when changes occur on the hosts. In addition the framework correlates package information with National Vulnerability Database (NVD) to then alert on what packages are actually vulnerable. This proactive approach to security allows the NAS IT Security team to have a clear understanding of the security posture of the hosts and the network.Designed and implemented Puppet infrastructure for deploying and managing Xen hypervisors and virtual machines (vm) running Gentoo and CentOS.Replaced a paper based process for system administrators to request privileged access to an online system written in PHP with a MySQL back end. The new system saves time for system owners, administrators and Security team members. What used to take days now takes minutes.Wrote a ReSTful API in Python to distribute custom /etc/sudoers file to hosts. This API allows system administrators to get correct and updated user privileges with a simple cron job. The API empowers Security Team members to grant or revoke access to any host on the network.

Worked with the Mission Assurance Software (MAS) team to architect, build and maintain Redhat web and database servers for the Problem Reporting Analysis and Corrective (PRACA) project. The systems require 99% uptime for customers including the International Space Station. To insure high availability and data center failover I coordinated the installation of F5 Big IP at two facilities at NASA Ames Research Center. Worked with system administrators at NASA Langley to install backup servers in the event of NASA Ames Research Center outage.Also worked with NASA researchers to develop a PHP/AJAX web based file repository for the Return To Flight (RTF) program. The repository allows researchers to upload files and then notify users of that specific upload without having to send an email. Developed a deployment strategy and architecture for running Linux using Parallels Desktop on Intel based Apple systems. This solution eliminated the need for the purchase of additional Linux hardware.

Worked with a team of four to streamline the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Redhat Linux upgrade process to under an hour. Initiated and led the project to archive all of the NAS OS X software to a centralized server to minimize time looking for CD’s while deploying OS X systems. Developed FileVault implementation process for all NAS Apple laptops to conform with new government security policies Developed a number of web based Perl/PHP/MySQL tools for system deployments, system tracking, software tracking and loaner requests.

Under a strict two month timeline, led a team of three web developers to redesign the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) public website (http://www.nas.nasa.gov) in the “One NASA” standard. Called upon by management to learn Linux and OS X system administration to help rebuild all supported Linux and OS X desktop and servers in the NAS division in a three-month time frame. The success of this work led to a promotion to System Administrator.

Helped start-up and run a two person online organic clothing company. Designed, developed and updated e-commerce store using Yahoo Merchant tools. Also built a number of Perl programs to maintain large site edits and updates.

Worked on the localization effort with the Design and Content team at PayPal to ensure content extracted for translation was not fragmented. Worked with quality assurance to fix the large volume of design and content bugs.

Frequently exceeding management’s requirements in my position as web developer for NASA’s Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division, achievements include:- Decreasing the download time of the NAS home page from one minute and twenty seconds to ten seconds over a 28K connection, resulting in a 50% increase in traffic. - Led a team of five in redesigning the NAS intranet website. This task required consolidating requirements from the user community, layout design, production scheduling, tool design and implementation. As a result of our efforts the site traffic doubled in just two months.

The production schedule for this project was extremely time-sensitive and required strong multitasking abilities.
