My academic studies are accompanied by the Journalism Traineeship and Scholarship Programme of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (translated from Journalistische Nachwuchsförderung der Konrad Adenauer Stiftung). As a scholar of this programme, I am able to complete a practical journalistic education in an international media environment supplementary to my academic studies. During this four-year programme, I am gaining additional profound journalistic experiences through a variety of different seminars concerning multimedia reporting, ethics and law in journalism and broadcasting, among other fields.

The Konrad-Adenauer Foundation Media Programme Sub-Sahara Africa initiates and promotes projects to further develop the media landscape and improve journalistic standards in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. As an intern and research assistant, I carried out independent academic and journalistic research on the media coverage of migration and refugees and how the narratives, attitudes and debates differ in the various regions of Africa and Europe. In this context, I also carried out the organization, logistics and budgeting for a conference titled “Media and Migration: Telling Moving Stories”. Alongside these projects, I set up, managed and updated a new website and produced content for all social media platforms. On a weekly basis, I monitored and analyzed the African blogosphere and wrote monitoring reports for the website, colleagues and stakeholders of KAS Media Africa.

MDR Aktuell is a public broadcaster for the federal States Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and a member of the ARD consortium of public broadcasters in Germany, which covers international and national news on a daily basis, while focusing on the area of mid-Germany. As an intern at the newscast, I wrote news briefs, investigated a variety of stories and produced visual and multimedia content. I interviewed, covered and reported stories on my own and got especially involved in the international news coverage where I reported about topics such as the global pact for migration and the climate conference.

Orange by Handelsblatt is a young and innovative online news format operated by the nationwide economical, business and financial newspaper Handelsblatt. While I studied in the United States in 2017 at the University of Oklahoma, I freelanced as a foreign correspondent reporting about topics such as president Trump’s cancelation of DACA or Trump’s conflict with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Un. I wrote articles for their online news site, including photos, video clips and infographics and produced content for Instagram.

During my internship at the newspaper Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, I wrote articles, features and essays for the daily newspaper and its online platforms on a daily basis, covered press conferences and interviewed a variety of people, ranging from the former 96-year old chairman of the press conference held by the state of Lower-Saxony to a 19-year old young farmer who is planning to take over her parents’ farm. This story was front-page news in the February 6th, 2018 edition of the paper.

Studying abroad at the University of Oklahoma gave me the opportunity to get involved in the student newscast OU Nightly. I worked on the editorial team writing news briefs for the newscasts and editing video content. In addition, I anchored the news briefs and news updates during the live newscast. Additionally, I managed many behind-the-scene roles, including technical director, camera operator and audio director.
