Profile bio

About Saad Ayub

I am a recent Master's graduate from Princeton University in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and am extremely passionate about fusion, plasmas, and applications in aerospace. This field has given me an insight into the possible future humanity could take, from inexpensive electricity around the world to powering and propelling space missions into a new era. Within these fields I am most drawn to plasma diagnostics and propulsion, owing to my experience at General Atomics through the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab and with the University of Tokyo, as well as work with the EPPDyL lab at Princeton University. I have a both practical and fundamental knowledge of these fields from my work and my specialized education in the field, and am ready to put my ability and passion behind the next chapter of my life!

Spanish Translation Team Lead

United States

As the Spanish Team Lead, I have led a team of 5-10 volunteers in translating informational pamphlets and articles from English to Spanish to distill essential medical knowledge into clear, practical forms. We have worked to bring knowledge about dermatological and maternal care, vaccinations, and other such topics to Spanish-speaking minority communities across the United States. In doing so, I have come to demonstrate strong analytical skills and a thoroughness in translation accuracy to ensure the material distributed to our event hosts and 32 active outreach partners was as accurate as possible. Additionally I would facilitate communication between the Director of Translation and the Spanish Translation Team, bridging gaps in contact, expectations, and standards in a professional and constructive wayCommunity HealthEd is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to educate communities across the United States, and provides translation in a number of other languages, including Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, and more.

Assistant Instructor

Princeton, New Jersey, United States

Selected as an Assistant Instructor for the Space Flight course at Princeton, which is a Departmental class of 48 students in the Mechanical and Aerospace Department. Also selected for Foundations of Engineering, a large class of 140 students. In these roles I was responsible for the supplemental education of the students, clearing up misconceptions, and holding office hours for in-person instruction and support.

Magnetic Reconnection Project Intern

Tokyo, Japan

Selected by the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab for an internship exchange program at the University of Tokyo for research on plasma physics and spheromak-Field-reversed-configuration plasma merging on the TS-6 experimental device. I worked in Dr. Yasushi Ono’s lab of 20+ students, measuring and reconstructing Soft X-ray emissions using signal amplification via microchannel plates and data from sensor arrays. We reported reconstructed emissions to be used in further investigations of axial/transverse transport mechanisms in magnetic reconnection and of microsecond evolutions in plasma flow, and I additionally revised old codebases to integrate with our expanding experimental capabilities while assimilating into the group workflow of data collection, troubleshooting, and operation of the magnetic reconnection trials and the TS-6 device.

Laboratory Assistant

Princeton, New Jersey, United States

Worked in the Electric Propulsion and Plasma Dynamics Laboratory (EPPDyL) at Princeton University to design, construct, test, and write documentation for a milimeter-precision three-axis stage for vacuum tests of MPDT plasma thrusters. The culminating prototype performed as expected through motor-driven leadscrews, controlled via custom circuitry, sensors, and a DAQ device driven by a program written in LABVIEW. The prototype was designed to be suitable for use in a vacuum chamber, minimizing the wiring and sensors installed in vacuum and through selection of materials known to be safe for use and operation in extreme environments.

Sep 2022 - May 2023

Fusion Plasma Diagnostics Project Intern

San Diego, California, United States

At General Atomics, working with the Princeton Plasma Physics team on the DIII-D tokamak, I developed, prototyped, and characterized a novel tunable filterscope, improving on the time-resolution of spectrometers and the wavelength rigidity of filterscopes. Working directly with Dr. Alessandro Bortolon, Collaboration Coordinator at the General Atomics San Diego Campus, I built and tested a plasma diagnostics prototype to measure live output from the fusion reactor. We were able to gather data directly similar to that of existing diagnostics equipment and performed comparative analysis to identify the effectiveness of the new filterscope. I also wrote and interfaced Python scripts between the lab equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrometers, etc.), and the prototype for a comprehensive optical and physical characterization and data collection.I was fortunate enough to present my work at the 64th Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics, receiving an Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research.

Jun 2022 - Aug 2022

Administrative Organizer

Gaia Energy Research Institute

Alexandria, Virginia, United States

In this role, I was tasked with directly assisting the founder of the company in both administrative and technical tasks, employing a diverse range of skills in online technical research and across Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat in remote work during the pandemic. Specific tasks included conducting preliminary price-cost estimates for novel technologies, creating and formatting figures for published journal articles, and generating slide decks on new renewable energy fields to be presented at conventions and meetings
