About Sam Conway

From a young age, I have been fascinated by the process of creating and understanding how things work. As a kid, I still remember being amazed about my R2D2 Lego set as it seemed like magic to me that all these tiny pieces could make this complex object. This fascination fueled my journey, leading me from Lego sets to designing and making my own homemade rocket engines. This passion led me to the University of Wisconsin - Madison where I am currently an undergraduate student studying mechanical engineering. I have further fed my dedication towards engineering by taking high level courses in design, dynamics, mechanics, rocket propulsion, etc., all with the same curiosity that drove me as a kid. I have also joined and actively participated in different clubs including the largest aerospace society in the United States: The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. My devotion towards engineering will carry over to the industry where I look forward to contributing my skills to solve tomorrow's most pressing problems

  • U.S. Ice Drilling Program
    U.S. Ice Drilling Program Intern
    U.S. Ice Drilling Program Jun 2023 - Aug 2023
    Madison, Wisconsin, United States
As a Mechanical Engineering Intern with the US Ice Drilling Program (IDP), I had the privilege of contributing to cutting-edge research vital for understanding and addressing the urgent challenges posed by climate change. The IDP, established by the National Science Foundation (NSF), plays a crucial role in advancing our knowledge of the Earth's climate history, abrupt climate changes, and sea-level rise prediction. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern with the US Ice Drilling Program, I undertook a multifaceted set of responsibilities contributing to the program. My tasks encompassed CAD design, precision machining using manual mills and lathes, FEA studies, and machine assemblies. Notable projects included crafting innovative tools, such as a snowmobile hitch for towing a winch system over Antarctic ice and machining custom field-specific sockets and no-go gauges. My expertise extended to ensuring the structural integrity of cargo loading ramps for airplanes, aligning with certain design standards. Additionally, I actively contributed to complex assemblies of drilling systems, motors, and electronic component stands.Working with the US Ice Drilling Program was an invaluable opportunity to apply my mechanical engineering knowledge to real-world challenges. It reinforced my passion for engineering and allowed my put my engineering skills to the test while also learning invaluable engineering knowledge along the way. In addition to the opportunity to tackle complex engineering challenges, I had the privilege of working alongside an exceptional team that truly made my experience memorable and worthwhile.
  • Spaceport America
    Spaceport America Cup Structures Lead
    Spaceport America Oct 2022 - Jun 2023
Spaceport America Cup is the largest intercollegiate rocket engineering competition in the world. The competition brings teams from almost every continent to design, build, and fly rockets of all calibers. This is the first time a team from UW-Madison has made it into the competition, and we are all thrilled to compete. As a structures lead, it is my responsibility to ensure the structural components of the rocket follow critical design parameters to safely and effectively launch the rocket. I am responsible for helping design and build various components including the airframe, motor mount, couplers, fins, bulkheads, retention system, and simulation design. I oversee general rocket construction, providing guidance and expertise to ensure the highest quality outcome. Another key component in my role is communicating between team members and other subgroups so everyone is informed of the progress of the project. I have also made it a personal priority to mentor and teach new members valuable knowledge I have learned from my experiences with rocketry to prepare them for their future roles in the project.
