A new UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development and the Earth Charter has been established through the Earth Charter Center on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the University for Peace (UPEACE), and UNESCO. The purpose of the Chair is to promote transformative education experiences that cultivate the fundamental values and ethical vision necessary to move towards a more sustainable world. The uniqueness of this project is that it will work at the intersection of education, sustainability, and ethics using the Earth Charter as a framework. The courses will explore the practical implementation of the sustainability paradigm and the Earth Charter principles in management, leadership, and education settings.As a faculty in this initiative, Sam offers periodic courses on Education and Values for Sustainability with the Earth Charter.

Sam took early retirement from full-time university teaching to engage in other opportunities for teaching, service and writing. He continues to teach doctoral courses in Instructional Leadership and foundational core courses on a 1/3 time basis. He remains active in the MA in Holistic and Integrative Education and gives additional lectures for courses in Peace and Social Justice and the Ethical Dimensions of Leadership. He has served as an invited professor to INACAP to provide advanced training for university instructors teaching for the Technological University of Chile. Currently, he is also an invited adjunct professor teaching selected summer courses for St. Michael's College in Vermont and is serving as n external dissertation advisor with Pacifica Graduate Institute.

Sam was an invited professor for INACAP at the Technological University of Chile which has 13 campuses and is the largest university in the country. Sam taught two intensive courses to 120 professors representing virtually every discipline, helping them improve their instructional effectiveness. The course was taught from an interactive studio setting broadcast to 13 locations and included innovative experiential activities unusual for this format. Evaluations indicated a highly successful response to the courses and also indicated implementation of ideas and strategies.
