Sam Duggan has extensive experience appearing in commercial disputes, the criminal courts, Royal Commissions and other forms of inquiry. Sam appeared for Cardinal George Pell AC in the Royal Commission into Child Sexual Abuse, cross examining all relevant witnesses and adducing evidence from Cardinal Pell. He has acted for and/or advised senior politicians in various capacities including a NSW Treasurer, a former Commonwealth Attorney General, and a Federal Senator. He appeared as junior counsel in separate Royal Commissions for the former Prime Minister, the Hon. Scott Morrison, and former member of Cabinet and Minister for Veterans Affairs, Andrew Gee. Sam has also appeared for the Liberal Party of Australia in a number of cases in the Supreme Court of NSW and at ICAC. He has appeared as Counsel Assisting at an ICAC inquiry into corrupt officers of Correctives Services NSW, and has appeared in private and public ICAC hearings for persons of interest.Sam is often instructed by the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in federal prosecutions, and appeals to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal, primarily relating to Counter-Terrorism, drug importations, money laundering and white-collar crime. He accepts briefs to appear for both prosecution and defence. He is regularly briefed in commercial disputes and public law matters, and recently appeared for the successful appellant in the Court of Appeal (NSW) in a matter that raised important issues about the law of restitution and the Australian Constitution: Sims v Commonwealth of Australia (2022) 109 NSWLR 546. Prior to coming to the bar Sam was an insolvency litigator in a large commercial law firm.
