I believe that when someone has a research project underway, a reference librarian can help them recognize that multiple controlled vocabularies, organization systems, and search interfaces are available to them. Query term expansion might be hugely helpful for one project but be detrimental to a different project that has different aims. I also think that my background in music history, furthermore, might give me a fresh perspective on the value of knowledge management and disambiguation to scholarship in the arts and humanities. Note that I do not doubt the value of knowledge management to scholarship in fields outside the arts and humanities, either; I simply am not well-versed enough in those fields to promulgate about the value LIS has to them.Fortunately, the knowledge I have gained throughout my time as an LIS student will surely self-perpetuate. There are several research projects involving CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) that I believe I can make happen. Prior to my completion of my MS in Information and Library Science degree, the interests of mine that currently fuel the nascent ideas I have for future research projects had still existed, but it is only upon my taking the necessary courses that I have developed the competence to parlay such research interests into adequately designed controlled experiments. I now know of the tools available, e.g. there is software for Critical Discourse Analysis; the Classification Web is an excellent database; Library of Congress Subject Headings (including Form subdivisions) is analyzable as a linguistic structure, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis is a hybrid qualitative-quantitative research method that can be used to find prevalent themes among respondents’ answers to interview questions, etc.
