SLM are an asset managing company that acquire and manages rural land on behalf of institutional investors. Their mission is to scale up regenerative, ecological farming and forestry systems that deliver financial returns and environmental benefits.Whilst working for SLM, I worked mainly on a 350,000 acre cattle ranch called Wilacora in Cunnamulla, a small town 12 hours West of Brisbane, but often travelled across SLM’s 1.2million acre properties to assist on other ranches when needed. These were both in Queensland and across the boarder in New South Wales.Duties included;• Mustering the cattle and moving them from paddock to paddock by motorbike. This was a time consuming task and frequently took 5 hours to complete. Also, due to the heat, temperatures would get up to 47degees c. This task was undertaken at sunrise, around 4am, so the cattle would move freely. In the earlier stages of my job as a ringer, when there were more cattle, gyrocopters was also used to muster the cattle.• Tagging and branding the cattle when in the cattle yard. This was for both new cattle that had recently been bought and older cattle that were getting prepared to be sold.• Building fences – this was a mix of 1-4 wire fences, including barbed wire, and the new single wire electric fence, which was being implemented for SLM’s new cellular grazing system.• Mustering and processing wild goats and sheep on the property to sell on.• General maintenance of the property; repair broken pipes leading to troughs, repair broken fences and electric fences, feeding of dogs, digging new drainage ditches using a tractor, putting out lick for the cattle when it was too dry and arid for grazing and control of pests.

Wicost Concreting is a well established concreting contractor who works up and down the Gold Coast and around Brisbane area as a subcontractor for many large housing developers in the region. Whilst at Wilcost, I worked as a concreting labourer.Duties included;• Preparation work - levelling the ground using picks and shovels, barrowing in top soil for even ground, using a screed, boxing in, cutting mesh and laying it, tying mesh etc• Pouring concrete, pulling the mesh, shovelling and raking to ensure even distribution.• Wheelbarrowing• Spraying • General labouring duties - cleaning up site, washing equipment, organising trailer, removing box work etc.Through out this time, I also worked around the Carbrook area of Brisbane as a general handyman. Duties have included; painting, pressure washing, basic joinery work, gardening, basic electrical work, fencing, roofing, and office work.

During this time I travelled all over South East Asia visiting Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Burma.Whilst travelling, I developed several useful skills including;• Budgeting and planning skills by financing, planning, organising my year around the world. This involved using various spreadsheets and keeping a record of expenses• How to adapt to unanticipated situations and improvise new plans due to periodic travel mishaps and unexpected events• Develop negotiation skills through daily contact with sellers in markets and vendors throughout Asia.• Cultivate language and communication skills through contact with people from around the world. I learned to use non verbal and verbal communication to overcome communication and language barriers
