PhD work has given me detailed experience of working with Microsoft packages including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and a range of other software packages and techniques include statistical packages 'R', Statistica and PRIMER.This PhD is part of the three year ESPA ALTER (Alternative Carbon Investments in Ecosystems for Poverty Alleviation) project, which is based in Ethiopia and Uganda and seeks to determine how improved knowledge about soil degradation can be used to address rural poverty issues. This is of key importance to Africa with 90% of people's livelihoods directly dependent on soils through farming, and with agriculture being the key economic output of Ethiopia. Soil degradation is a widespread and important problem in this part of the world. Termites in particular are a key component of soils in the tropics and subtropics, being highly important ecosystem engineers involved in a number of soil processes and soil formation, while at the same time being major pests of timber and crops. Termites have been little studied in this part of Africa and their important influence on soil properties remains understudied and little known at present. Show less

Role centered on processing soil samples for biological and chemical analyses, assisting with MicroResp analysis from a field liming experiment.

My work as a field ecologist at Leicester focussed on river restoration ecology, via the taxonomic identification study of riverine macroinvertebrate communities of a number of river biotopes, or microhabitats, and using these findings to assess river health, coupled with on-site profiling of the river channel, following implementation of restoration measures on the River Welland and River Gwash.

Intermittent and ongoing work over the years, including fish removal and relocation, and removal of pest fish species.

Working to record and protect Kefalonia's population of nesting loggerhead sea turtles (Carreta carreta), work included beach surveys, clearing litter, educating tourists, giving talks, selling charity products, setting up a festival.
