Profile bio

About Sam Gandy

A lifelong nature lover, PhD ecologist, independent researcher and science communicator, with a deep passion for the restoration of nature and our connection to it. I channelled my interest in nature into my academic career, obtaining a masters degree in entomology from Imperial College London and a PhD in ecological science from the University of Aberdeen, and I have experience of conducting ecological fieldwork (both independently as part of a team) in various parts of the world. Following my time at university, I've worked in my free time as a self-motivated independent researcher, having initiated collaborations and authored and co-authored and published papers on a variety of topics. Following my PhD, work has encompassed scientific assistant, consultant and content writing roles in addition to work as a research associate and assistant, and a role as Innovation Team Leader for ecological consultancy Ecosulis. I am an experienced science communicator, enjoying such engagement opportunities, and I have delivered many presentations on a variety of topics to a range of audiences, and have written and published numerous articles in addition to several book chapters. I also have varied experience of desk-based research and of deciphering and transmuting scientific information into more accessible formats. I have a particularly strong interest in the restoration of nature, and our connection to it, the latter being a particular research interest, and I have been involved with ecological restoration work through my PhD, and through work with the University of Leicester and Ecosulis. Given the degree to which I feel nature has enriched my life, I am keen to be a voice for it and work in service of it moving forward.

Listed skills include Conservation Issues, Entomology, Field Work, Research, and 15 others.

PhD work has given me experience of independent research and self-organisation and of working to deadlines, and has given me detailed experience of conducting fieldwork overseas, of report and paper writing and editing, and of desk based research and literature reviewing and of networking and delivering posters and presentations on research at a number of conferences. PhD work has given me detailed experience of working with Microsoft packages including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and a range of other software packages and techniques include statistical packages 'R', Statistica and PRIMER.This PhD is part of the three year ESPA ALTER (Alternative Carbon Investments in Ecosystems for Poverty Alleviation) project, which is based in Ethiopia and Uganda and seeks to determine how improved knowledge about soil degradation can be used to address rural poverty issues. This is of key importance to Africa with 90% of people's livelihoods directly dependent on soils through farming, and with agriculture being the key economic output of Ethiopia. Soil degradation is a widespread and important problem in this part of the world. Termites in particular are a key component of soils in the tropics and subtropics, being highly important ecosystem engineers involved in a number of soil processes and soil formation, while at the same time being major pests of timber and crops. Termites have been little studied in this part of Africa and their important influence on soil properties remains understudied and little known at present. Show less
