The American Sugar Cane League was created in 1922 when Louisiana's sugar industry was the de facto American sugar industry. However, ASCL policy concentrated on agricultural research and governmental relations for the first 90 years of its existence.Irwin, hired as a consultant in 2012, is the League's first public relations director. He is engaged in the ongoing process of developing the Louisiana sugar industry's public relations plan.

In addition to his work with the American Sugar Cane League, Irwin serves on the board of directors for the Festival of Words, a literary festival that honors the spoken word in Grand Coteau, La.
