Our project is based around migration and we have designed a new service to help with integration and establishing yourself in the city, which we are calling “Mate up”.We have worked with many migrants, academics with a background in migration and loneliness, Flemish social service type organisations from Gent, and also businesses. They are from all over the city, Belgium and the world. The project is part of a service design course where we work on real projects which originate from companies and social organisations within Belgium. The course focuses on diversity, with teams consisting of people from very different work and personal backgrounds working together on a real life, applied problem. We use service design methods and self directed learning to create an innovative solution to real problems/challenges provided by companies and organisations in Belgium. In addition, we work with the broad range of coaches on the project to develop our professional skills.

I was a quantitative demographic researcher working on an EU Horizon 2020 project. I gained experience in quantitative methods, presenting research at large international conferences and writing and publishing academic papers. I also further developed my skills in using R and Stata.

This was a one month secondment as part of my work on the Longpop project. As part of this I gained experience in:Database management, historical demographic records, archiving, record linkage, "the Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN)", "the Intermediate Data Structure" and software testing.

As part of this internship I learnt about data mining methods and specifically sequence analysis in order to use it with large social science panel datasets.
