About Sam Kirkham
I am a researcher in speech science, with expertise in experimental phonetics, speech processing and computational modelling. My research focuses on the physical movements of the vocal tract during speech and how these movements generate acoustic signals. More specifically, I work on dynamical models of speech, computational models of phonological cognition, and applications of phonetics in computer speech processing. This research is currently funded by two UKRI grants (2009-2013, 2014-2015).In 2012, I founded Lancaster’s Phonetics Lab, which has subsequently grown into an internationally-leading research group, comprising 5 permanent academic staff, 1 permanent technician, and around 10 PhD students and post-docs. Our lab has world-class research facilities and receives external funding from UKRI, Leverhulme Trust and the British Academy.
