Sam Launchbury began carrying out contracting work in 2001 as an agricultural contractor, work including fencing and railway embankment clearance for a locally run steam railway line.In 2007 Sam employed his first member of staff and the company quickly grew its work force, starting to provide a complete service for agricultural civil works, including the groundworks and civil engineering for one of the first anaerobic digesters in the UK along with the construction of various farm structures both above and below ground. Throughout, the business continued to carry out a large array of site clearance work. Sam continued to invest in this area of work and purchased a Dymax Tree Shear in 2008. In 2011 the company became formally registered sdlaunchburyltd.Seeing the huge volume of biomass material being produced from the site clearance work and the focus from authorities to prevent burning the material on site, SDL invested in a large self-propelled JENZ wood chipper and began to sell the material it produced to larger power stations across the UK. As the biomass market expanded and smaller boiler systems came on line SDL altered its production methods to cater for all biomass systems along with carrying out contract chipping for customers with their own timber supply, 'providing a one stop solution for the production or supply of biomass woodfuel around the UK'.In 2014 SDL ceased carrying out civil engineering works and focused its attention solely into the production and supply of biomass woodfuel. 2014 saw the operation grow dramatically. Putting to good use its knowledge and experience gained from previous civil engineering projects, SDL has designed and built a state of the art biomass production/drying facility in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire which caters for all types of biomass systems. This, with the introduction of its own in‐house transport capability underpins SDL’s ambition to become one of the UK’s largest and most reliable woodfuel suppliers.
