The NASA DEVELOP Applied Sciences Capacity Building program leverages NASA Earth observations to address environmental and public policy issues through interdisciplinary research projects. Our Moffat County Agriculture team focuses on using LANDSAT and EMIT remote sensing tools to map vegetation and foraging characteristics in order to inform grazing practices in NW Colorado.

Work with research teams in western Oregon to understand plant-pollinator interactions by monitoring the phenology of flowering plants, collecting and identifying pollinators, and aiding in data analysis and literature research. I also worked with a plant community ecologist in northern California to monitor plant communities’ response to landscape alterations including drought, grazing, and nitrogen deposition.

Undergraduate Research Assistant at the University of Oregon's Institute of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in Dr. Lauren Ponisio's lab. The lab's research focuses on plant-pollinator community ecology. My thesis concerns the foraging patterns of bumble bees across a gradient of forest canopies.

Worked with a crew of four to conduct USDA ARS rangeland ecology data collection protocols in Thunder Basin National Grassland. Projects and protocols included learning and performing extensive grass and forb plant identification; visual cover estimates; Robel-Pole Visual Obstruction Readings; shrub measurements; grass and forb specimen density counts; destructive biomass collection and sorting by plant functional groups, and non-destructive biomass estimates; SYNTEK soil moisture monitoring, and grass phenology monitoring.

As an Outdoor Education Intern at Mt. Pisgah Arboretum, I serve primarily as a nature guide for elementary school children. I maintain an expertise of these forests, including different ecosystems, local natural history, and how it is maintained in compliance with local regulations. Training included attending four guided walks concerning the different ecosystems in the Willamette Valley (riparian, oak-savanna, transition, conifer forest), as well as local insects and flowering plants.

Worked full time with a team of interns to perform all tasks related to managing a successful two acre organic farm in south central Alaska. Tasks involved bed-prep, seeding, planting, irrigation, construction, weed and pest management, harvesting, and selling more than 30 different vegetable crops. Tasks were performed in varying weather conditions including hot sun, cloudiness, rain, and frost. Learned an extensive amount about plant (especially Brassica) morphology, genomes, stressors, and life cycle.

Spent 7 months living with and immersing in a host family. Focused on learning French and Wolof and working in a local community garden. Responsible for all aspects of garden operations including constructing nursery beds, transplanting, fertilizing, irrigation, and harvesting. Completed the program with a final community project and presentation in order to facilitate cross-cultural communication and learning. Learned an extensive amount about how environmental stressors impact local economy and culture, especially for rural women.
