Team LeaderLateral Solutions, Australia Aug 2010 - Jun 2014Perth, AustraliaLateral is a custom software provider based in Subiaco, with clients in the Education, Agribusiness, Government and Health sectors. I joined to build a team to deliver web, cloud & mobile projects in order to diversify the business. During my time the team has grown from humble beginnings to seven developers and a modern development process using the latest tools & techniques.Notable accomplishments:• Implemented a stable & reliable development environment, including cloud-hosted git source control and work item tracking, continuous integration and deployment infrastructure, cloud logging, coding standards, and shared libraries.• Transitioned the team from a resource-based contract developer model to a project-based software delivery model, in order to provide more customer value and employee satisfaction.• A streamlined project reporting system, with a high degree of automation to minimise the time required for weekly reporting.• Established a biannual employee review procedure to improve skills and performance and ensure that employees can work toward their career goals. -
Senior Analyst/ProgrammerCsbp Jul 2007 - Aug 2010Perth, AustraliaCSBP is a fertiliser & chemicals manufacturer located in Kwinana. I initially joined on a fixed-term contract to build an effective internal software development team as part of a broad-ranging programme of work. The programme was significantly reduced in scope shortly after I started, and I was handed responsibility for systems integration in the ERP upgrade project. Following the successful completion of that project, I transitioned into a permanent role as part of a small in-house development team, where I was the lead on several successful legacy replacement projects. Notable accomplishments:• Managed the systems integration sub-project of the $4m ERP upgrade project. This involved identifying, reverse-engineering and porting legacy integration components (RPG, CL, SQL and Java) to Biztalk 2006 R2, the testing and planning the deployment. This sub-project was completed on schedule and under budget.• Project Lead for a 5 person legacy rewrite project to manage soil & plant samples & results for CSBP’s agricultural laboratory. The legacy system was an AS/400 ‘green screen’ RPG application written in 1998, and it was replaced with a Microsoft .NET (C#) WinForms application with significant additional functionality to reflect changes to the lab business. It also included integration with the ERP & CRM systems (JDE and Siebel), and some external customers and partners. The project was run using an Agile methodology. It delivered all its objectives, and was regarded as very successful by the customers, project team and sponsor.• Replaced Biztalk with an NServiceBus-based ESB solution to address some shortcomings of the Biztalk platform, and reduce the skilling requirements for the consolidated IT department following the Wesfarmers Energy merger. The NServiceBus solution integrated custom AS/400 applications via Client Access, some process control SCO servers via MQSeries, and external partners via FTP & SOAP. -
Senior DeveloperParadigm Tsm 2002 - 2007Perth Area, AustraliaParadigm TSM is a salary packaging outsourcing provider based in Perth. I joined the company during its startup phase, when the business software consisted solely of a legacy tax application implemented in Paradox, and by the time I left we’d implemented extensive custom systems on the Microsoft application stack, automating transactions and business processes. As Senior Developer I did most of the software design, from high-level systems architecture down to the coding standards, and also took on project management responsibilities later in my tenure. Other responsibilities included database administration, operational support, data analysis, and provision of office tax expertise thanks to my familiarity with the inner workings of the software.Notable accomplishments:• A VB6/ASP based internal web application to track deposit and payment transactions on virtual and physical accounts, including integration with the legacy application.• Ported and refactored the extensive tax calculation logic from the legacy application, initially to T-SQL for use in the web administration system, then to a reusable .NET library for use in new systems. This work culminated in the decommissioning of the legacy application.• Designed a distributed application framework on the .NET platform to provide a generational replacement for the VB6 web application.• Early adoption of Agile software development techniques, including an index card work item tracking system and a Continuous Integration server running CruiseControl.NET.• Several external integration projects using Microsoft Biztalk Server 2004, encompassing flat file and xml web service data interchange mechanisms.• A technical roadmap setting out the systems architecture for future development, incorporating current and future in-house developments and commercial off the shelf (COTS) products.
