My general attitude toward life is found in one word: growth. That would include my perspective of leadership, working with organizations, working with people, teaching and learning. I believe that the focus of my leadership should be oriented in such a way so that people can grow—that employees grow and develop in their craft, that students grow and develop as life long learners.I believe that leadership is more than knowing the “right answer” in every situation. The leader’s job is to empower and engage the organization to be able to grow and develop competencies for the betterment of the individuals that make up the organization so that the organization improves and grows as well.Teaching and learning—whether leading classrooms, leading a district, or leading an organization—should strive for the same principle. It is the superintendent’s job to empower and engage the staff so that they can develop competencies for the betterment of their professional practice, the campus, and the district. My teaching style is to ask questions, avoid giving away the answer, and holding students to high expectations for performance. My goal is to develop thinkers with the practical skills they need to face the challenges they are likely to face in the “real” world. I think students want this kind of leadership.I also think districts want this kind of leadership. I don’t think districts or their people want to be mediocre or function in a half-hearted way. Needless to say, I am looking for an opportunity to lead a district to improvement. I am looking for an opportunity to work with people to create a district that points with pride to its accomplishments, to the growth of its people, to the growth of its students.I am looking for an opportunity to help create a district that learns, grows, develops in such a way that they won’t even notice when I am gone.

TeacherPlano Isd Oct 2013 - PresentI have, after many years, returned to the public school classroom. I started in the education field in the public school classroom in 1994. So, now, twenty years later, I am there once again--challenging a room full of high school students to explore and interact with the joys and frustrations of the English language, literature, and writing. While I am an experienced teacher, I feel like a brand new teacher as I acclimate to the school, the district, the curriculum, the culture of teaching.

PrincipalSchool Of Excellence In Education Jul 2012 - Mar 2013San Antonio, TexasI was principal of two small charter high schools: Rick Hawkins HS and Milton B. Lee Academy (a STEM school). Both of these small schools needed lots of work to become the successful schools envisioned by the board and to be worthy of the name of the charter district: School of Excellence in Education. Though a positive direction was begun, my time at the schools was cut short by near-sighted and narrow visioned leadership. I hate to see potential ignored or thrown away, and I am deeply disappointed that we were not able to finish the job.
