About Sam Said

Sam Said is a Senior Governance Advisor at Department of State Development at Department of the Navy / Human Resource. They is proficient in English. Colleagues describe them as "Sam Said was Senior Governance Advisor in the critical districts of Rutbah and Hit, while I was Senior Rule of Law Advisor for western Anbar province, Iraq. Sam was America's good will ambassador, winning Iraqi hearts and minds everywhere he went. One we were walking down the center of the main street when a car swerved across several lanes of traffic and sped straight for us. Our brave military support team went on high alert and I knew we all were having a sick sinking feeling, because we were at an intersection where someone had been killed by a suicide bomber not long before. I can still see mental snapshots of school kids, shop-keepers and customers watching us in wide-eyed horror. The car screeched to a halt inches from our knees. Its doors flung open and a half a dozen Iraqis lurched out of the car and laid their hands on Sam. What were they doing? They were embracing him. They were kissing his hands and face! These were severely handicapped Iraqis just returning from a clinic Sam had helped set up for them. One man actually dropped his crutches and threw himself into Sam's arms. All this Biblical scene taking place on the main thoroughfare of a major city with crowds of Iraqis watching... the effect was electrifying. This story is emblematic of the effect Sam had on Iraqis. Every where I went in his districts, Sam had already been there and the Iraqis were claiming Sam as one of their own,--- In Iraq, such a claim is not made lightly. Sam was a trusted advisor and mentor to various levels of Iraqi goverment on many complicated initiatives. His work greatly improved the health and security and economic prospects across the region. His support for our Rule of Law mission enabled us to make such rapid inroads with the locals that his area of operations became the gold standard for Rule of Law across all Iraq. Sam's personal touch with the Iraqis moved many projects forward that would not have been possible without his involvement, such as restoring rail way service to one-third of Iraq. I remember another time when I had to ask him to lead a United Nations election observation team through harm's way, even though this was far outside his normal area of operations, even though credible death threats had been made against that team, even though this was a Rule of Law mission and not tasked to Governance, and even though we were not receiving all the support we should have had from higher HQ. This was so risky, because it required Sam to go into areas where he was not a known and beloved figure. Yet, he undertook this mission-critical task with courage, even though the credit went to others. This is the real-deal in being a team player! I will be grateful to Sam Said forever for the wonderful work I saw him do. I hope I am lucky enough to serve with him again someday."
