Profile bio

About Sam S.

As an ambitious and self-motivated problem solver, it's my aim to transform society's power infrastructure through the implementation of clean energy solutions. I’ve demonstrated this passion through numerous roles, starting with founding my nuclear fusion R&D company when I was 16 years old, Progressive Fusion Solutions (PFS). My initial goal was to build a nuclear reactor to apply my passion for engineering & science while also challenging myself to do something ambitious. I achieved this aim within a year, and from 2016 to 2020 PFS:

Commissioning Oversight Specialist Co-Op

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Through this role, I was involved in the technical review of various documents for MEP projects. These included building floor plans and shop drawings for equipment such as VFDs, chillers and more where I would evaluate the accuracy of such from a technical perspective to ensure requirements were being met. In addition, I was tasked with reviewing other documents such as consultant site visit reports, business cases, and O&M manuals. Through all of this, I significantly improved my technical knowledge of architectural, mechanical and electrical building systems, communication and collaboration skills, analysis skills, and technical writing skills. While collaborating with various groups including project delivery and energy management, I got to witness the various phases of a building project lifecycle from startup, to design, to verification and closeout.

Hardware Engineering Co-Op

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

I took on a number of responsibilities in this role with the main being as a key developer of the facility’s Production Line Simulator (PLS) project which required me to work with ECAD to generate schematics, plan the physical rack layout, wire the system together, and acquire parts. PLS now performs tests against firmware releases of SE's advanced power meter products, including the ION900. I also collaborated with the global supply chain team by assisting in the analysis and implementation of at-risk electronic components employed within SE’s advanced power meters. Supporting this was my work with LTspice circuit simulator and oscilloscopes to simulate and perform electronics tests on components to replace at-risk parts identified with the global supply chain team.

My primary role at Pilot was to identify and complete market research on prospective technology and brand partners which required detailed analysis and comparison of brand values, products and audience with that of Pilot. After identifying companies that had collaboration potential, I communicated with and pitched numerous partnership proposals to them which led to the gain of 10 brand and technology partnerships including World Nomads, and Airbnb. I also utilized Hubspot's CRM tool to organize each partnership pipeline. My secondary role was to design the layout of Pilot partnership page website which contributed immensely to the acquisition of partners.

President, Chief Engineer And Founder

Progressive Fusion Solutions

Vancouver, Canada Area

I founded PFS when I was 16 with the goal of developing a nuclear fusion reactor design to replace fossil fuel power plants and end climate change. Before my grade 12 year of high school (1 year after starting PFS), I had designed and built a fusion reactor that fused atoms in my basement, which I had also raised $10k for through crowdfunding. Later, I incorporated the company and hired a team of advisors and team members, raised an additional $7k through investors, and was granted lab space at the University of British Columbia, where we developed our second reactor design. I received the BC Young Entrepreneur Award in 2019 in recognition of my accomplishments with the company.
