About Sam Stevens

My work focusses on the problem of fire spread in informal settlements and humanitarian encampments. I am current a fire engineer/researcher for Kindling. My role has included being the technical lead responsible for delivering the instrumentation for a series of 25 large-scale fire experiments, aimed at quantifying the fire hazard of burning shelters of different materiality. In conjunction with this, I am also coordinating a materials testing program to investigate the utility of common test methods used for classifying the fire performance of tarpaulins used in the humanitarian sector. Previously, for my PhD thesis I developed a large-scale urban fire spread model with the goal of creating a virtual testing space for parameterising informal settlement fires. As well as developing the overall model infrastructure in terms of accurately conceptualising physical/material conditions, I focussed on four key modules of the model: compartment fire growth, externally-venting flame (EVF) dimensions, radiative heat transfer and ignition (piloted and non-piloted).I also have experience using GIS to produce fire risk analyses and maps at the scale of cities, settlements and individual structures. Specifically, I have been involved both in conceptualising new quantitative fire risk methodologies in Cape Town and Nairobi. I also use GIS as the front-end and back-end interface for my large-scale fire spread model.
