Upon stepping in to this newly created, senior-level role, I provided strategic direction in conjunction with our CEO and COO. This involved implementing key leaders, including new plant manager and manufacturing support manager, to drive initiatives critical to the organization’s success. We also introduced robust agile manufacturing processes.My impact included driving smooth product introductions into manufacturing—increasing repeatability and reliability, while reducing costs. Also, I revamped our support structure—accelerating turnaround of improvement opportunities and reconfiguring/relocating 50% of plant to increase efficiency with U-shaped flow.

In 2011, I advanced to direct our manufacturing operations team, including production, procurement, manufacturing engineering, quality, and maintenance areas. As a result, we seamlessly introduced new products to manufacturing, while improving processes. Accomplishments included increasing inventory turns from 8 to 13.4 turns per year and inventory accuracies from 67% to 95%.

In this role, I helped improve revenues, profits, cash position and debt-to-equity ratios by introducing an “employee first” mentality. Therefore, I steered a paradigm shift in company’s leadership style from focus on metrics (safety, quality, productivity) to an emphasis on employees first. My achievements included igniting a culture shift by starting our “Family Values” program and instituting a “Freedom Based Mindset.”

Initially, I joined Hagie to reinvigorate lean methodology and help drive their transformation. This included evaluating various key leaders and projects company wide, and subsequently coaching leaders to align with the new methodology. Accordingly, we decreased inventory by 15% and increased on-time delivery from 12% to 55% and moved from a batch to one piece flow environment.

Due to dedication, passion, and results, I progressed steadily and grew as a leader to manage incoming/outgoing dollars and processes of the plant’s entire inventory. My contributions included driving change to a mixed modeling scheduling approach on a highly complex multipurpose line. Consequently, we trimmed inventory $650K; increased inventory turns 25%; and raised inventory accuracies from 70% to 97%.

In 2003, I was tapped for a department management role and led teams of 20–50 employees to outperform all previous metrics. Highlights included leading +20 teams to cut waste and boost efficiencies by leveraging continuous improvement expertise. Additionally, we raised output 20% yearly; slashed quality deficiencies 27%; and sustained 99% on-time shipment every year.

In this post, I was selected to train with TBM Consulting Group based in North Carolina and subsequently became a certified leader to drive process improvement in the Story City operations. By bringing individuals together to form cohesive teams, we reduced costs by $500K per year and increased efficiencies for all parts-making cells from 70% to +90%.

Early in my career, I was promoted quickly to a Scrap Analyst role to study data and make informed decisions, regarding +$1.5M of scrap comprised of lumber, glass, and aluminum. By focusing on minimizing salvage, we saved $250K by reducing lumber scrap from 21% to 5%.
