Profile bio

About Sam Wagoner

I am a 5th-year biomedical engineering major at Rochester Institute of Technology. Throughout my five years of college, I have been fortunate enough to work at four companies focused on my development as an engineer and teammate. I started working as an electrician for our family business, where I worked for ten years during all school breaks from high school to my early college years. Starting with no knowledge, I can now wire residential buildings completely. I've had the privilege of working alongside people from diverse backgrounds, helping them develop their skills. Through this experience, I gained a deep appreciation for finding pride and meaning in one's work while acknowledging perfection's impossibility. From a young age, I had a particular interest in biology and trying to understand how everything works within the human body. Through my biomedical engineering studies at RIT, I have used my physics, math, and engineering skills to enhance my ability to achieve that understanding. For my first internship experience, I worked in the wine analysis laboratory at the Laird Family Estate vineyards. Being 2,000 miles from home in a completely new environment, I embraced this opportunity to work in a new team. In this fast-paced environment, we worked long hours to ensure the fermentation process of hundreds of wine lots proceeded according to the winemaker's expectations. Team cohesiveness and the fostering of a positive work environment were necessary. By the end of my experience, I had a comprehensive understanding of the winemaking process and the ability to perform all relevant analyses. My next experience at Vida-Blend allowed me to work in a production facility, where I saw the importance of SOPs and organization in this process. Additionally, it allowed me to get a new perspective on how a business runs. My recent opportunity at Alkermes allowed me to integrate my RIT learnings with my previous internship experiences. During this experience, I worked alongside a team to develop and conduct a DOE experiment to analyze the flow and compaction behavior of pharmaceutical blends. I used relevant literature within the field to inform my decision-making and valuable team input. Throughout this time, I educated myself on the intricacies of bulk solid flow and performed statistical analysis to represent the data I obtained best. This research, data gathering, and analysis culminated in the publication of an article. Altogether, my experiences up to this point allowed me to refine my skills as an engineer and an effective team member.
