Profile bio

About Sam Wight

I am a mechanical engineer and manager with proven leadership, over a decade of industry experience, and broad design, analysis and manufacturing skills. I am a dedicated and driven worker with strong technical and interpersonal skills and a love for learning. My primary work experience has been in aerospace, but I have also worked with biomedical and construction equipment fields, and I am excited by challenging engineering projects with innovative applications, regardless of technical focus. In my first five years at SpaceX, I founded a technical team to design, analyze and integrate satellite and spacecraft payload adapters. I was promoted to Lead and then Manager, with up to six direct reports. I was responsible for at least twenty different projects at a time, and regularly presented to commercial, government and international customers. During this time, I maintained an active personal presence in system and part design and analysis. In early 2015, Elon Musk personally offered me a new role involving future projects and the opportunity to be the founding member of an eventual San Francisco bay area SpaceX office. I was focused primarily on the initial structural design of the rocket and spacecraft which will colonize Mars, culminating in designing and analyzing the largest carbon fiber cryogen tank which has ever been made.At the beginning of 2017, I joined Astranis Space Technologies as the fifth team member to try my hand in the startup world as we work to make new, lower cost and more efficient satellites. After four years, I've built a mechanical and thermal engineering team of ten full time and several intern/contract employees and still growing, inside a company that we've built up to a $1.4B valuation at series C.

Listed skills include Finite Element Analysis, Aerospace, Engineering, Matlab, and 19 others.
