I lead a group called Core Services with ~15 engineers (three teams); think of us as Plaid's Plaid. We're responsible for these domains in the backend: the core data models that power our client and bank connections, data ingestion pipelines that power Plaid's products, and privacy governance. These are also Plaid's most mission critical systems.

As a Staff Engineer, I've been working on initiatives designed to improve the serviceability and observability of our hybrid cloud platform (VMC on AWS). Our latest initiative is designed to help our Autoscaler service take more informed decisions before remediating deteriorating infrastructure.

One of the most technically challenging projects I have ever worked on but well worth the effort! Our team designed a solution to secure datacenters from server to virtual machine (VM); creating a Trusted Infrastructure framework to support business-critical workloads. In particular, I worked on creating the Trusted Infrastructure Agent service which can handle 1000s of concurrent attestation, key operation, and configuration requests in C++. This architecture, in addition to beefing up our security posture, ended up accelerating existing encryption operations by 2.5x by leveraging thread synchronization, caching, continuous refresh token flows and intelligent failure recovery policies.

It took me 18 months to be able to post this, but it was totally worth it!More platform security work on the next vSphere release. Specifically, I worked on supporting a software stack for TPM 2.0 chips in vSphere. I wrote a library in vCenter which attests to the health of an ESXi machine. Now, as soon as you attach a host to your vCenter and reboot it, a security dashboard will tell you everything you need to know about the host's state, and most importantly, whether you can trust it. Read more about how we establish a root of trust all the way from vCenter down to hardware!I also worked on virtualizing these TPM 2.0 chips for use by well, virtual machines. Now, with a single click (or maybe less!), you can enable the entire suite of Windows 10's fancy security offerings such as Credential Guard, BitLocker etc.

Starting with vSphere 6.5, security became a front and center focus. Instead of adopting a 'hardening' focus, we started baking security right into the product. Started working on Secure Boot for Virtual Machines in the first half of the year. This was also my first brush with a security focused project so I ramped up by learning and implementing public-key cryptography techniques and digital signature verification (particularly - Microsoft's Authenticode).Secondly, on physical servers, secure Boot is almost entirely implemented in the firmware on physical servers. However, we didn't want to ship OpenSSL with our virtual firmware, so we developed a mechanism where Secure Boot can be configured from our firmware, but the boot loader signature checks are done in a more secure, contained Virtual Machine context. Got a prototype working in three weeks, and then worked on authenticated writes to Secure Boot variables. Finally implemented the firmware UI to configure the feature (turn it on/off), and add and append to existing Secure Boot variables.

My first job out of school! Started work with the Platform Infrastructure team. One of my first tasks on the job was to revamp memory accounting in virtual machines (uncovering lots of bugs in the process). Got my hands dirty with kernel resource management along the way and rewrote significant parts of virtual machine power-on logic. Redesigned the way memory is allocated, added user configurability and simplified the process in a way that made for much easier debuggability.
