It wasn’t until she moved to the island as an incoming freshman that she found her niche with BIR as a lightweight rower. As a then-recent transplant to Bainbridge, she credits crew with helping her develop a deep sense of community and broader self-confidence. With BIR, Sam qualified for and competed at four youth national championships, with her boat ranking 6th in the country her senior year. During her time with BIR, she set multiple lightweight erg test club records, participated in and won the Northwest Indoor Championships, and served as team captain.Sam was recruited to Stanford’s lightweight team based on her BIR results. She rowed throughout her four years and captained her senior year, earning four IRA national championship titles, CRCA National Scholarships, and All-American Team Honors recognition during her time with the Cardinal.Sam now lives in Seattle and works for Madrona Venture Labs. She loves cycling, spending time with her family and friends, and attempting the NYTimes Spelling Bee in her spare time.
