Trained across all services under the Acute Care Surgery(ACS) service at a level I trauma center. This includes surgical critical care, trauma, and emergency general surgery. Performs all functions of the ACS Advanced Care Practitioner (ACP), assuming responsibility for determining the patient’s health and medical status by taking a health history, performing physical exams, initiating screening and diagnostic procedures, providing health maintenance services, and managing acute and chronic illness. The ACP Assistant Manager functions in the fast-paced acute care setting with a schedule that includes provision of clinical services during day, night, weekend, and holiday hours.•Collaborates with the Trauma Services Director and ACS Section Chief, the ACS ACP Assistant Manager promotes a productive, quality-focused, and fiscally responsible work team through effective leadership and problem-solving skills.•Assures development of an effective work schedule. Coordinates the self-scheduling process. Coordinates development and revision of scheduling guidelines with team.•Implements and evaluates outcomes of effective orientation planning and continuous learning. Assist with development of orientation handbook and facilitates shadow opportunities with interdisciplinary team members as well as key consulting medical teams. •Facilitates ACP educational opportunities alongside ACP manager and ACS attendings including but not limited to coordinating clinical simulation experiences, monthly staff meetings, encouraging participation in resident education opportunities.•Participates in quality improvement projects working together with senior leadership, section chief of ACS, surgeons, residents, ACPs, and nursing staff.•Works alongside of Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, ACP Fellowship, and Surgical Residency Program to deliver and provide educational opportunities to learners and facilitate progression through each service line of ACS

Evaluation and management of critically ill, intensive care patient populations including but not limited to trauma, neurosurgery, orthopedic, vascular, plastics, ENT, general and bariatric surgery. Management includes both acute and chronic conditions in these patient populations while they are admitted to intensive care unit.•Discriminates between normal and abnormal physical, psychological, and developmental findings, and appropriately determines when to consult with and/or refer to other members of the health care team. Initiates, implements, and prescribes appropriate treatment plans, consulting with the physician as needed. Performs or requests laboratory and screening tests. Administers medications as appropriate.•Hospital rounding with attending physicians and residents on acute care surgery patients to perform assessments, review patients’ medical records, assess changes in patients’ condition, and adjust care plans, accordingly, write orders (to include but not limited to pre-op and post-op orders, laboratory studies, radiographic studies, special procedures, medications, and consultations), progress notes, transfer orders, and discharge summaries for inpatients.•Works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including Attending Physicians, Fellows, Residents, other ACPs, medical and ACP students, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Pharmacists, Case Managers, Social workers, Consultants and more.•Management of complex social situations and planning for a safe and successful hospital discharge and ensuring proper follow-up to minimize need for re-admissions.•Participates in goals of care and care planning meetings with staff, palliative care and family members.•Works closely with organ procurement organization to facilitate care of patients meeting brain death criteria as well as those patients who meet criteria for donation after circulatory death.

Core Responsibilities:•Provides care for post-op cardiac surgery patients, including, but not limited to, valve replacements, coronary artery bypass grafts, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assistive devices (VADs), and aortic aneurysm repairs.•Works with surgical post-op issues that include cardiac dysrhythmias, electrolyte imbalances, ventilator management, wound infections, incision care, care of chest tubes, operation of external/internal pacemakers, pleural effusions, pneumothorax, acute kidney injuries requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and hemodynamic monitoring with arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, lumbar drains, titration, and monitoring patients with cardiac-specific infusions.•Works collaboratively with Cardio-thoracic surgeons, PAs, ACNPs, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and physical/occupational therapists to provide optimal patient care.•Communicated intensively with patients and their families.Extended Responsibilities:•Charge nurse of an eleven-bed critical care unit with accountability for patient assignments, staffing, and bed placements for next day surgery patients•Chair member for multiple committees such as pain, quality improvement, and staff education.•ECMO specialist
