Processing Assistant (American Legion Collection)

Greater St. Louis Area

As the Processing Assistant, I processed and removed materials from all of the boxes of the American Legion Collection and created an inventory. I adhered to an organizational method that follows the Missouri Historical Society's policies, keeping the needs of future researchers in mind, and rehoused all of the materials into archival folders and boxes. I created a finding aid for the collection to be used by researchers, students, veterans, etc., which included a summary of scope of the collection, brief histories of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary, and a detailed explanation of the collection's organization.

Exhibits And Collections Assistant

The St. Louis Mercantile Library

Greater St. Louis Area

As the Exhibits and Collections Assistant, I have had the opportunity to be involved with a number of things. Under the Art Curator, I was responsible for the framing and un-framing of artwork, the hanging of artwork around the University's campus, and the proper storage of artwork. One of the first jobs I accomplished here was completing an inventory of all of the artwork on campus (over 500 pieces) and processing all of the artwork in the storage facility (over 300 pieces). Both of these projects involved photographing, taking dimensions, and background research before creating records for the item in the PastPerfect database system. In addition to these projects I managed the processing and cataloguing of our African Art collection as well as the Native American Artwork collection. After all of the objects were in PastPerfect, I oversaw the selection and installation of objects from both collections for displays in their own exhibition cases. Finally, one of my other duties includes writing social media posts for the Mercantile Library's facebook page, and researching content to tie into our collections.

Exhibit Design And Program Development Practicum

Greater St. Louis Area

Our task for the Exhibit Design and Program Development Practicum course was to create an exhibit for the Missouri Historical Society. We were given the information that the exhibit would center around a large, magnificent painting - Flores Mexicanas - and we were given creative freedom to develop sections and select objects to be placed within this exhibit. As a leader on the content team I helped research various aspects of our exhibit topics and wrote the labels for three sections. I also assisted the Asset and Visitor Experience team in selecting objects for the exhibit, coming up with the flow and design of the layout, and editing the proposed interactive elements. Finally, I collaborated with the Programming team to propose ideas for events surrounding the exhibitions run. When our course was completed we presented our exhibit to staff members at the Missouri Historical Society and they have taken our work to be edited and created into the exhibit, Flores Mexicanas: A Lindbergh Love Story, that will open at the museum October of 2018.

Aug 2017 - Dec 2017

Curatorial Intern

Greater St. Louis Area

In this position I was given the opportunity to curate a pop-up exhibit for The Saint Louis Brewery. Schlafly Beer wanted to showcase St. Louis beer history as well as promote their own company by way of an portable exhibit called The Brewseum. Myself and two other interns were provided with this limited information and we were given creative freedom to design 16 portable wall panel displays to be showcased at their Hop in the City event. Together we researched, selected items from their archives, wrote the content for the panels, and designed every aspect of the visual displays. On the day of the event we installed the shelving, objects, and labels onto the panels and monitored their safety throughout the event.

Collections Intern

The Griot Museum Of Black History

St. Louis, Mo

My internship responsibilities at The Griot revolved around organization, storage, and cataloguing. I have had collections experience at a larger institution before, but this was my first experience working with a smaller museum of little staff. I successfully completed an inventory of over 300 objects that had been donated to the museum and stored for later processing, and created a document for future organizational use. These items were then rehoused and stored with their locations marked.

Data Visualization Specialist

American Alliance Of Museums-Public Engagement Subcommittee

St. Louis, Mo

As part of the Public Engagement Subcommittee for the annual American Alliance of Museums meeting held in St. Louis in 2017, I researched and compiled data to be used in the creation of a website. Our website was to be a toolkit for museum educators, school teachers, and career counselors, in order to get children interested and aware of museum carers from an early age. Our website can be viewed here!: www.museumgateway.com

Marketing And Communications Intern

St. Louis, Mo

As the Marketing and Communications Intern for a small non-profit organization, it was essential that I reached a wide range of audiences to gather interest and support for our events. It in this capacity that I became familiar with using the Social Media platforms for more than just social interaction but in its ability to raise awareness, monitor the group's page, and promote events to hundreds of people. Through this position I also became familiar with seeking out local newspaper and event outlets to get the word out and have our events on the city-wide event calendars.

Archival Digitization Specialist

Greater St. Louis Area

In this position I was responsible for the digitization of World War II Registration Cards to be put onto the Ancestry.com website. The digitization process included inspection of the cards for personal information (which needed to be redacted) and for harmful materials such as staples and tape, which would be removed. Once inspected, the cards would be scanned and audited for legibility using a digital editing program. This position required excellent handling skills and patience, and also required a level of technological knowledge to be able to properly clean the scanner.

Feb 2016 - Aug 2016

Collections Intern

Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan Area

As this was my first experience in a museum setting, I had no idea what to expect. I ended up falling in love with collections work and had a terrific experience. While at GRPM, I led the cataloguing efforts for the Rocks and Minerals Collection with over 1,000 specimens. The cataloguing process involved doing research on the specimens, moving and handling the fragile items, professionally photographing each specimen and noting the dimensions, assigning each specimen an accession number and properly applying the number to the physical specimen, creating a record in the museum's Collective Access database for each one, and managing the storage of this collection within the larger GRPM archives. This was all done with the public in mind as the specimens would be displayed in storage for tour groups to view and the records would be made accessible to the public online.

May 2015 - Aug 2015

Perservation Intern

Greater St. Louis Area

With the internship in the Preservation department, I received hands-on experience working with paper artifacts. The records I worked on were the military records that had been damaged during the 1973 fire that destroyed over 16 million records. I received experience working in the dry laboratory where we removed harmful materials such as tape and staples, carefully cleaned the mold and soot from the records, unfolded or detached fused records, collated each parcel, and assessed the records for further treatment. In the wet laboratory I learned how to properly humidify records 2 different ways to loosen the fibers for further flattening and detaching fused records, use the book press to flatten the pages, and learned to create a safe adhesive to mend damaged records if the loose piece could be found. The handling skills I learned while at this internship have helped me in every experience I had moving forward.
