During the summer after my second year at University I secured a place on the funded Undergraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (URSS). The title of my project was “Analysing the effects of urbanisation on biodiversity with the use of passive acoustic devices on two newly developed housing estates in Derby”. The title of my project was “Analysing the effects of urbanisation on biodiversity with the use of passive acoustic devices on two newly developed housing estates in Derby”. Upon the approval of my ethical proposal, I used social media and the distribution of flyers to find participants for the study and to remain inclusive. A questionnaire was provided to participants to gain information on their gardens and the species they regularly observe. Audio Moths were deployed for the duration of five days in participants gardens. One device collected data on birds and another device collected data on bats. I conducted advanced quantitative analyses in both R Studio and Kaleidoscope, where I applied several acoustic indices to the data to assess the diversity of bats and birds across the two newly developed housing estates. I presented data and communicated outcomes visually and in written form via an academic poster at a conference held at the University. Show less
