Simon Mathias holds a MEng degree in Civil Engineering from University College London, a MSc degree in Water Resources, Technology and Management from the University of Birmingham and a PhD in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London. He currently works as a Professor in Environmental Engineering for the Department of Engineering at Durham University. He has previously held positions as Lecturer in Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London and Professor in Computational Geoscience in the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University. He has also worked as a Civil Engineer for the Maritime Business Unit of Royal Haskoning DHV. He has 20 years of experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of hydraulics, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental engineering, environmental management, mathematics and computational methods. He has authored 76 scientific journal articles and has served as associate editor for the Journal of Hydrology, Transport in Porous Media, Hydrogeology Journal and the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology. His research interests concern the development of mathematical models to describe movement of fluids and contaminants in porous media. He has worked on a wide range of different applications including groundwater recharge, carbon capture and storage, nutrient transport and rainfall runoff modelling.
