Sam Cornwell (ARPS, MSc) is a photographic artist based in the Scottish Borders. A pioneer of the 'second a day' movement and vlogging, Cornwell is a Masters' graduate of Edinburgh University in which he was awarded the ESALA student award for his studies in Material Practice. He won an Astrophotographer of The Year Award and went on to found the Art in Space programme at one of the UK's largest observatories before inventing the Solarcan, the world's first commercial solargraphy camera. When not building cameras in his unusual Hawick based "red room" workshop, Sam can be found teaching photography at Heriot-Watt University, working as a photography archivist for a local castle trust or raising his two young dizzying children.The multidisciplinary nature of Cornwell’s practise includes the study of the the photographic dichotomy of digital and film, whereby he asks the question “What is lost in the photograph in the age of the digital revolution?” This approach, which is a topic he has pursued for over a decade has developed into a passion for keeping chemical based photographic mediums alive and more importantly understood. It has led him to become proficient in alternative photographic practises such as pinhole, wet-plate collodion & solargraphy.
