Research Project: “TOTAL SYNTHESIS OF ANTIMICROBIAL COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES, SUCH AS ANTIBIOTIC SACCHAROMICIN B”.- Designed and synthesized a wide range of fragments of Saccharomicin B using reagent-controlled dehydrative glycosylations for the direct stereoselective synthesis of deoxy-sugar glycosides.- Assembled the synthesized fragments into the heptadecasaccharide backbone of Saccharomicin B, thereby establishing the first total synthesis of this antibiotic.

Research Project: “DEVELOPMENT OF CONJUGATE VACCINES FOR BACTERIAL DISEASES, SUCH AS CHOLERA, FROM SYNTHETIC CARBOHYDRATE ANTIGENS”.- Designed and synthesized the complete O-specific polysaccharide (O-PS, O-antigen) of Vibrio cholerae O139 and collect a wide range of synthetic O-PS fragments thereof.- Conjugated the synthesized O-antigen and its fragments to suitable protein carriers by squaric acid chemistry.- Determined the minimum structural requirements in the Vibrio cholerae O139 antigen which, when transformed into immunogenic conjugates and used as vaccines, elicit protective antibodies.
