The International Wine Challenge takes place every year in London in April. It has been running since 1984 and is generally seen as the world’s largest and most meticulously judged wine competition. As one of five Co-Chairmen, Sam shared his expertise and lent his reputation to the process - overseeing 400+ judges, tasting thousands of wines over the 2 weeks of the competition. Throughout the rigorous judging processes, each medal-winning wine is tasted at least three times and sometimes as many as six.Judges assess every wine ‘blind’ and rate each wine for its faithfulness to variety, region and vintage. Sam headed up the Faults team, which makes final rulings on wines deemed ‘faulty’ by judging panels. This data comprises some of the most complete wine faults data available in the world.Sam is also one of three Co-Chairman of the Sake IWC Competition, an initiative he helped champion.In 2005 The Japan Sake Brewers Association Junior Council formed the Sake Samurai as a gathering of those who share a love of sake and the desire to nurture it. Sam was invited to join this prestigious group as one of its founding members. In 2002 Sam co-founded a boutique winemaking operation - Domaine Matassa. Located in France's Roussillon region, Matassa produces distinctive red and white wines from low yielding old vines that are grown according to biodynamic principles. Matassa’s wines have been well received by critics, and are now distributed in some of the world's key wine markets.

As a Wine Technologist, Sam traveled to the world's key wine regions working with producers to improve wine quality for Marks and Spencer. Over the period of his employment, the company realised significant growth in both sales and profitability of its wine products.
