About Sami Arafa
As an architecture graduate from Kingston University, currently working with the Barbican Renewal Co-design Team, I have developed strong problem-solving and collaboration skills. My model-centric design approach allows me to analyse designs from different perspectives throughout their development and identify overlooked details, something I find is less effective when working solely in 2D. Through last summer’s construction internship, I gained office and site experience in the full building process from producing tender documents for selected ITTs to procuring materials, personnel and sub-contractors and finally project handover under the guidance of industry professionalsAs a short-let apartment agent, I was responsible for 26 apartments and coordinating staff schedules, including for our overseas apartments, sourcing furniture replacements, as well as handling administrative office duties and weekly deliveries.

Part-Time Co-Designer
CurrentCurrently assisting the Barbican Renewal Team bi-weekly. Working with architects and creatives from Asif Khan Studios and Beyondthebox to realise the suggestions of the wider team and local community leaders to create new flexible spaces in suboptimally used areas all while still emphasising the rich architectural context within the Barbican’s lakeside terrace and many foyers. Also focusing on improving wayfinding, signage and lighting, which has been an area criticised by visitors and employees for some time and is in need of an overhaul.
Summer Intern
My summer internship broadened my knowledge of the construction industry and gave me more experience working alongside architects and engineers across five departments.Tendering: I gained knowledge of various contract types, including loaded contracts designed to incentivise subcontractors and reduce delays. I particularly enjoyed creating tender documents, evaluating both technical and commercial aspects, and striking a balance between a profitable but enticing contract. Projects + Cost control: I was guided through how to manage risks and costs through all stages of a project during my time. Being taught how to create work breakdown structures, identify the activities on the critical path, and calculate their free float on Primavera. The manager highlighted my problem-solving skills and work ethic in the evaluation form.Procurement: They taught me how to find, source and organise grade suppliers and sub-contractors. Shadowed managers coordinating personnel and equipment shipments to international construction sites. Contracts: I Studied under the head contracts manager, who emphasized the importance of precise language in contracts to prevent companies from exploiting loopholes and evading their obligations. Haptown construction site:After completing their health and safety course, covering working at height, in enclosed spaces and general PPE, on-site engineers informed me of potential project issues and the steps they take to provide ample lead time to required activities to ensure the project runs smoothly. I received construction experience in excavation, forming moulds, landscaping and more on residential, commercial and leisure buildings. These transformative months equipped me with the knowledge to positively contribute to the daily management of a project. It also showed me the disconnect that can occur between the architect and the construction site, further instilling the importance of connecting with the site through regular visits.
Front-Of-House + Back-Of-House Team Member
Front-of-house duties:included greeting customers, taking and communicating orders to colleagues, and managing the line during busy periods. Back-of-house duties:Included handling morning deliveries, safe food storage, food preparation and stock count which I used to form subsequent deliveries.
Short-Let Apartment Agent
I managed 26 apartments as a short-let apartment agent, handling administrative duties and sourcing product replacements.I completed weekly staff schedules including for our overseas apartments when necessary such as when I sourced an external cleaner remotely for one of our Spanish apartments to prevent a cancelled booking. I carried out apartment inspections post check-out and maintained company records and listings, adjusting them to reflect the current market. Handled calls from tradesmen and clients as the sole operator. An unexpected but enjoyable task was being the first point of contact for our clients, which allowed me to make them feel welcome and helped me see the city through a tourist’s eyes, deepening my appreciation for the city's rich architecture and facilities.
