The goal of OPR's Radical Roving Recreation Program is to change the attitudes of misguided and misdirected youth in Oakland by meeting them where they are - emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Many of the youth in RRR have been abandoned by their families, schools and mainstream community centers. Many have known fear, hunger, homelessness and hopelessness. RRR rejoins these disconnected youth with a new community through celebrating holidays, life successes and introducing them to new opportunities and experiences. By engaging youth in a supportive community, RRR prevents criminal behavior and reduces the number of youth in the juvenile justice system. Specialized component is the digital storytelling workshop. This aims to engage at-risk youth with self expression and community awareness by creating visual media concerning subjects that they determine are important to their daily lives. While being enlightened with the technical and compositional aspects of producing film & video, they will also be empowered to work as a team, be exposed to logistical organizing and planning management as well as excel their creative talents.Through digital storytelling, these youth will be engaged to form educated opinions on current events, global awareness and community issues.Skilled trades such as basic carpentry, architecture, electronics & craftsmanship all exposed through set design & lighting composition.As Recreation Specialist for the video workshop component, as well as general staff of Radical Roving Recreation, duties include:-Determine Risk and Protective factors of the youth served-Acknowledge the Developmental Assets the workshop will empower the youth-Design curriculum for for 8-12 week workshop. -Conduct lessons & lead discussions.-Mentor youth with guidance and support whenever needed.-Support entire staff with any assistance, service or task.-Acquire equipment and resources as needed.
