About Sam P.
I wake up every day genuinely excited about where advances in AI/ML, nuclear fusion and renewables, space travel, quantum computing, robotics and autonomous systems are taking us.The story of my journey to the foothills of generative AI is one of achievement in multidisciplinary biosciences whilst at the Universities of Nottingham, Cambridge, and Imperial College London. Conducting R&D in neuropharmacology at Eli Lilly & Co., U.S.A. Co-founding a biotechnology start-up at the intersection of additive manufacture and regenerative medicine. Finding my inner strength after having a significant brush with mental health issues and a subsequent career change that led me to qualify as a carpenter and on to my own roofing company. Undertaking a web development bootcamp during the 2020 lockdowns and networking past the point of exhaustion after a day’s work to finally get a start as a Junior Data Scientist.I became Head of Data Operations after six months. I found that by trusting my experience derived gut instincts, backed up by well-chosen metrics enabling data driven decision making, was the key to my success.I built a strong multicultural team diverse in ages, skillsets, and educational backgrounds who support each other. They have rewarded me with commitment and the ability to meet all challenges that have been presented to us. We use Python-based automation to gather and manipulate text data, ready for ingestion by our NLP/AI models to create insights.I have researched and learned what I needed when I needed, facilitating my strategic thinking, and executing my plans. I have travelled independently to over twenty countries on four continents and getting into and out of many scrapes along the way has shown I am a real world problem solver, and that I just love travelling! One day I will be going into space!I value those who plan, are passionate and show commitment that mirrors my own. If kindness, being assertive – not pushy, and you see success as working for others not just yourself as values you live by, I want to be a mutual with you.Having completed my 2023 goals, I’m preparing for my personal 2024 goals - smashing the first semester of my Masters, learning more about the technical aspects of quantum computing, continuing with my Mandarin and Hindi practice, and adding Scottish national park hiking to my experiences of the English and Welsh national parks.

Sam P. work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Junior Data Scientist
Working with Python, SQL & NoSQL databases, and web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flask) I learnt to leverage the Scrapy package to acquire data ready to be manipulated and cleaned for ingestion into the AI/NLP insights generation platform.
Construction - From Apprentice To Company Co-Owner
I passed my City & Guilds Levels 1 & 2 in Plumbing and Carpentry, together with a BTech Level 3 in The Built Environment. I moved further north to begin applying my knowledge and be closer to my family. I experienced all the highs and lows of the U.K. construction industry, metaphorically and literally, working under motorised horse-boxes under construction and on top of roofs of residential and commercial buildings.Overall it was a lot of fun applying my engineering skills, manual dexterity and business experiences to successes in various construction enterprises, then moving on to my own. Learning more about how good and bad companies are run when they face the same constraints, how they feel as someone at the bottom of the ladder, to running my own firm and issues around dealing with poor business partners. The fun and the learning experience of this phase of my life had to come to an end as the physical aspects of work were already presenting longer term warning signs, and it was time to move to engineering and building in a different sphere.
Co-Founder
Leveraging over seventy years of combined experience in business and heavy industrial engineering experience in the north west of England, four individuals diverse in gender and professional backgrounds co-founded a 3D printing startup.I developed the strategy and the plans to develop and market a 3D printer for the amateur superuser, a demographic with the financial means to afford a quality product with support packages. We would develop a technical community based in and around Greater Manchester, leveraging social media and volunteer efforts/user-groups. Simultaneously I established collaborations to develop novel printable materials, for example an edible chocolate with a research group in Sheffield, to embryonic stem cells and embryo components with an established research group at Oxford University. We had begun to generate revenue and garnered corporate interest from maintenance teams from several U.K. councils. Things were getting excited but before we could reap the rewards, a mental health crisis mandated my leaving the business.
Research And Development Scientist
Between 2001 and 2014, I was committed to a life in research and development in and around academia, and my last period of research was to investigate how embryonic stem cells were affected by their physical environment, contributing to a future where we might engineer replacement organs without donor issues. I was key in co-developing a system that could look at embryo development during implantation into the womb. Progression & Achievements:As part of my M.Sc. at the University of Bristol I organised and undertook paid research into the neurological pathways of anxiety, at Eli Lilly & Co. in Indiana and IUPUI, USA.I conducted a study into the current state of embryonic stem cells at the University of Manchester and in 2007, at the department of materials at Imperial College London, I conducted multi-disciplinary laboratory research in embryonic stem cells and biomaterials. My work at Imperial College London resulted in publications and leading a team to win a competition to commercialise academic research. I continued this work at the University of Nottingham to better explore surface chemistry of biomaterials suitable for embryonic stem cell development at the molecular level resulting in publication, using cutting-edge biophysics equipment. My interest in 3D printing/additive manufacture was ignited as we collaborated with the Langer laboratory at M.I.T. in the field of biomaterials. In a collaboration between the Universities of Nottingham and The Wellcome Trust Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge, I designed and engineered a system to view the developing mouse embryo during the implantation stage of development. In 2012, my work led to a patent application at the U.S. Patent Office and a paper in the journal Nature Communications, where I was the first Nottingham University author. In 2020, my contribution to this area of developmental biology was recognised with a mention in the book: The Dance of Life by Zernicka-Goetz and Highfield.
