https://www.bsc.es/pickard-samuel-colinAs part of the Knowledge Integration Team in the Earth Systems Services group, I work at the interface between real world decision making and climate science to convene and collaborate with diverse practitioners, advocates, and researchers working on informed climate adaptation interventions. I am interested the generation of actionable climate information, in particular understanding how science is translated into useful and useable knowledge, the roles and power held by different climate services actors, and how these dynamics impact the realisation of climate justice.

A new doctoral training centre that focuses entirely on ways to help ensure the UK meets its 2020 and 2050 targets for greenhouse gas emissions. The areas of research within the centre span many disciplines (from ethics to engineering) and interests (from policy to geology) but all are tied together with the thread of pursuing low-carbon technologies.

Selected for this fellowship to deliver 20 days of teaching in secondary schools. As well as lessons about my research, I devised curriculum lessons for Key-Stage 4 (GCSE) students developing my skills at speaking to non-specialist audiences and responding to tough questions.

Worked alongside commissioning team during handover and initial testing period of the UK’s largest CCS demonstration project. This further developed my experimental skills and I gained better appreciation of industrial research at a larger scale.

This short placement gave me an insight to working in central government. My roles in this time included liaising with a high-level steering group, producing background research for the UK CCS Roadmap (due out in the Autumn) and also preparing substantial work for DECC internally.
