Do you remember your first internship? Of course, you do; I can never forget mine. It was during my Sophomore year of high school when I wanted to find something that would occupy my time and develop my work ethic. After many hours of research, I found the NYLP (Newark Youth Leadership Program) which was offered by the Greater Newark Conservancy. The applications for the school year were opening soon, so I knew that I had to be one of the first applicants there.When I arrived at the Conservancy, the first face that greeted me was Nyima, the front desk receptionist. I introduced myself and we chatted about how our day was going. Afterward, I asked if Emmanuela Mujica, the NYLP Coordinator, was currently in the office. Nyima told me that Emma was leaving in the white van that was right outside. She told me that I could catch up with her and leave my information. I left the building, and I was able to catch up with her. Emma was a little shocked that ran out to catch her, but she knew that I was determined to be a part of NYLP; she remembered what I did when it came time for our interview.I will never forget what the NYLP program has done for me. The skills that I learned from the Conservancy has enabled me to excel in my future internships throughout my high school career. I became a Peer Tutor at my high school as well as an intern at a small tech company in my local neighborhood where I developed my entrepreneurial skills and learned more about the business world.At the end of my senior year of high school, I got accepted into a program called B-STAR (Business Student Transition at Rutgers) where I got a headstart in my college career through mentorship and 6 college credits. B-STAR has provided me with a plethora of resources that would have been out of my field of view; I have been truly blessed to have been part of an amazing program where I made life-long friends and long-lasting connections.I have attained an immense amount of knowledge in the last few years, but I know that this is not the end of my journey. I still have so much to learn along the way to the Supply Chain career that I'll have in the future, yet I also have so much to offer in that regard to potential employers that plan to seek out. I'm looking forward to my growth in the next 5 years.
