Took over technical leadership of SRE team. Converted the SRE team from an infrastructure operations team into a software tools delivery team.Led the design and implementation of the migration of all Betterment applications from EC2-based AWS deployments to a disaster-recoverable, fully infrastructure-as-code, Kubernetes-based deployment system. This is a convention-driven solution that supports continuous deployments of any 12factor Ruby or Java applications built using the Betterment toolkit.Migrated an 80+ engineer polyglot monorepo codebase with 25 projects to a modern containerized, parallelized CI system. Build + test time reduced from hours to minutes. Designed and implemented a build tool for Betterment's polyglot, monorepo codebases called Coach. It's a CLI and an API server. The CLI provides functionality like building artifacts for various languages and generating conventional CI configuration for CircleCI by doing code introspection. The API server manages handling incoming events about CI builds and triggering deployments. All configuration is in code, allowing for seamless disaster recovery.Collaborated on the design of (and migration to) sopsorific -- Betterment's mozilla sops-based secrets management system. Sopsorific is a set of conventions around mozilla sops on AWS. The gist of it is a weekly email to collect your "blurb" of what you've been working on, what you're excited about, and what you've got coming up in your world.Re-designed a built an observability tool for DelayedJob. It pushes SLA metrics to CloudWatch and/or Librato, automatically creates alerts and sends them to slack. The tool also provides an admin UI for performing basic operations tasks (requeuing, deleting jobs) and investigating failures: stuck jobs, deep queues.Set up and lead the Rails Engineering Forum at Betterment -- an engineering-wide group of folks that work toward surfacing and building consensus around best practices in Rails development.Mentored IC and peopled-manager engineers across the organization. Helping them to craft and achieve their goals by better understanding their teammates, their strengths/areas for improvement, and the needs of the organization.Collaborated on design and implementation of TestTrack, Betterment's open-source split-testing and feature toggling framework. This includes the backend API, admin UI, javascript client, rails client, ios, and android clients. Personally designed and implemented the TestTrack Chrome Extension, a small but powerful tool for overriding your split assignments right from your browser. One of the lead engineers responsible for the patterns and practices used to decompose Betterment's legacy monolithic application (and database) into a domain-oriented service architecture. Everything from how to lift-n-shift data to when and how to redesign features in order to migrate them.
