Computer Technician

Complex Computers

Sheffield, United Kingdom

My role at Complex Computers was very similar to my previous work at Pc-PartX. I completed similar activities as an IT Technician. I had regular interaction with customers through booking in jobs, offering advice and guidance on a range of IT queries, inputting orders through the EPOS system and repairing a variety of electrical faults across a range of devices.

My primary role at DB Cargo was to help maintain the day to day technological side of the business. This varied from simple communication tasks such as providing desk side support to users, all the way up to liaising with entities across Europe to discuss technologies being used and providing in person training sessions on upcoming software to dozens of users, to then other tasks involving hard skills, such as setting up IT hardware, software and network devices for new starters to the company.… Show more My primary role at DB Cargo was to help maintain the day to day technological side of the business. This would include creating user accounts, ordering hardware from a supplier, configuring hardware and software, configuring the device to the company intranet and finally handing over the equipment and dealing with any queries the new starter may have.I also aided in the investigation of new technology, development of roll out plans and finally implementing upgrades to the existing infrastructure. Throughout my time at DB, I was also personally responsible for the set up and configuration of mobile devices for ground staff and drivers within the company, setting up accounts, tablets / smartphone side loading and managing SIM data plans for the devices.During my placement, I joined the Cyber Security committee for the DB group, entities from across Europe would meet monthly to discuss current cyber threats, what was being done to combat them and anything we then needed to do.Whilst at DB, COVID-19 sadly locked down the country, in preparation of this, I helped move a large portion of the business from Office based working, to home working. This included tasks such as configuring VPN tunnels on various machines, explaining to users how to set up their work machines at home and in some cases, visiting users’ households to set up IT and network equipment.I was asked to take up home working and managed to do so without any problems whilst also still meeting all of my targets, proving I am able to proficiently work not only in an office environment but also at home. I worked this role for just over a year, dealing with customers and repairing faults that they may have with their devices. Despite my primary role to repair faults, I also contributed to maintaining and upgrading the current IT infrastructure in the building and other similar duties like resolving network issues and software problems. As well as vastly improving my knowledge about systems and diagnostics, working here also aided my communication skills as numerous times a day I would serve customers to both book in jobs and to sell various items to them. I answered the phone, replied via social media and emailed customers as well as suppliers; assisting with any queries they may have. On a daily basis I saw various methods that attackers use to try and steal valuable information from customers, learning about the types of attacks that have happened allows me to better educate myself and advise people how to prevent such attacks happening to them in the future. Due to the nature of the work I was always working on multiple jobs at once which has vastly improved my ability to multi task and manage which order I undertake jobs. For example, starting a program installation on a job that can tick over in the background whilst you complete another job, rather than doing it the other way around for maximum efficiency.
