Men'S Leadership Project: Graduate Intern
The Men's Leadership Project is a mentoring program that pairs UVA undergraduates with boys in local middle schools. We combine Big Brother to Little Brother mentoring with group activities that improve the boys' confidence, relationships with others, and healthy decision-making. MLP participants encourage each other along their own paths to becoming the men they want to be.As an intern for MLP, I joined the Women’s Center team and worked closely with the staff on recruitment efforts, annual events, and the day-to-day logistics that make the program so successful for the Bigs and Littles. This experience gave me a closer look at how an extracurricular youth outreach program works in a Higher Education setting. I learned the value of integrating and manifesting University mission and goals into a productive, successful, and life-changing programs. One of the largest goals of the Men's Leadership Program is to teach young undergraduate men and middle school-aged boys the power and value of positive masculine relationships in a culture where hegemonic masculinity has normalized so many negative qualities. I was fortunate enough to help manifest this goal as well as learn from it myself. Further, this role allowed me to research gender and sexuality studies, masculine and gender theory, social implications of normalized gender roles, men's violence against women, and, most importantly, how we can inspire all masculine gender performers to change the world for the better.
