Born in Tierra Amarilla in the heart of Rio Arriba County in New Mexico and growing up in El Rito, New Mexico and Kingston, Jamaica, I wanted to see the world - but lacked funds to do so. Straight out of High School I began working in restaurants which quickly led to management positions. I lived in a Volkswagen bus to save money for travels through Central and South America, the Middle East, South Asia, Eastern Europe and East Africa. To support myself I worked as a private chef in the Hamptons, sold cameras and books and my own photographs, ran my own catering business, worked in construction and manual labor, wrote restaurant reviews for the local paper, worked as a farmhand in Northern Israel, and loaded beer boats on the Turkish Mediterranean. Along the way I organized an expedition to ruins in the Peruvian jungle, trekked solo in the Kaçkar mountains in Eastern Turkey, studied Spanish in Guatemala and Swahili in Zanzibar, hitchhiked through Jordan and Bolivia, auditioned for a movie in Egypt, read everything I could get my hands on, and developed a lifelong curiousity for the world around me. Through tens of thousands of miles on busses and trains and on foot and by bicycle I learned to listen to people - to hear where they were coming from, and what they hoped or wished for.
