About Samy Aboel-Nil

Even before the disruption of generative AI, I've always found value in spending the time up front to 'Be an Expert' on whatever topic I'm working on. I take this seriously, and I've always been a big fan of having super-high standards and expectations. I maintain agility/incremental learning by holding firm on quality but aggressively controlling scope. I believe the core of valuable, differentiated, products lies in matching a deep understanding of the customer/problem with the product's core technical design decisions (usually data structures, algorithms, and design patterns). Now with gen AI as a "super power" the impact of all those beliefs is magnified whether building product, building customers/revenue, or running operations.I apply these core principles on all the teams I lead, and maximize the use of generative AI so that we will end up on the winning side of this disruption. We are all in.I run projects across the portfolio of companies in ESW Capital that span from Sales to Product to Engineering. I run Crossover.com, so if you are passionate about helping create a world where the best talent have access to the best jobs globally, you might be passionate about that. And finally, I spend a very large portion of my time on projects focused on bringing disruptive technology improvements to the world of education. This one is tough because most of the relevant establishments strongly resist change, but the importance and potential impact is so high. I never stop recruiting. I hire the best talent I can find regardless of physical location. My team is in the US, UK, Canada, India, and 10 other countries. If you are a domain expert in your area, passionate about any of these things, and 100% committed to embracing an AI-powered future, you should reach out or explore one of our job opportunities on Crossover.com

  • Devfactory
    Cto
    Devfactory Oct 2011 - Jun 2018

I run a global team of senior technology folks (many are former CTOs and technical co-founders) who make strategic technical decisions across a large portfolio of acquired software companies. We rearchitect and revive these products on both a technical and feature level. This was a great role to see and learn from tons of examples of things done right, and wrong.
  • Tippr Inc
    President & Coo
    Tippr Inc Jun 2010 - Jul 2011
We built a Groupon-like technology platform, but that was entirely brandable by large existing publishers who wanted to get in on the group-buying action. In this role I:- Recruited a team of 40 employees across development, product management, sales, and support- Increased revenue over 50% each quarter- Sold and launched online commerce programs with notable TV brands (NBC, Fox, and Univision) and Radio stations (operated by Belo and Hearst).- Defined and launched a new online marketplace for the industry to buy and sell the inventory for group commerce sites.

Dell Inc (Acquired Messageone) Apr 2008 - Jun 2009

MessageOne was acquired by Dell Computer in April 2008.
  • Trilogy
    Head Of Technical Pre-Sales, Pcor
    Trilogy Jan 2000 - Jan 2001
    Austin, Tx, Us
I ran the technical Pre-Sales team that supported our enterprise sales team ($1M-$10MM opportunities) down to the mid-market ($250k-$1M). This required the creation of standard messaging to explain our technical differentiators (we used the TAS selling methodology), building custom technical demos, running POCs, and delivering on the "technical win" for the sales cycle.
  • Trilogy
    Co-Vp Of Engineering, Pcor
    Trilogy 1998 - 2000
    Austin, Tx, Us
In this role I did a LOT of org building and recruiting, building the engineering team for PcOrder.com (PCOR). I screened and interviewed over 1,000 developers and hired about 50. Our engineering team delivered simultaneous software releases across 4 distinct product offerings (and tech stacks). I spent approximately 25% of my time directly involved winning "big deals" in the field with the enterprise sales team. This is where I found my love of working directly with customers to deeply understanding their problems and needs. This is where I got the conviction that being an expert at the problem was the key to both selling customers and simultaneously gathering the right requirements and insights to drive back into the product itself, and the key success factor for great product managers.
  • Trilogy
    Product Manager, Tu97
    Trilogy Jul 1997 - Jul 1998
    Austin, Tx, Us
Fresh out of school, and part of Trilogy University class of '97. Our 4-person team defined and built a commerce platform that extended the core "engines" of differentiated value for Trilogy (complex configuration & complex pricing) online. I learned a lot about customer-driven product management. Our first customer was a $4M relationship, and we generated over $10M in revenue in our first 2 years.
