Hi, my name is Tomas Sanchez. I am a Level 1 Apprentice in Carpentry. My goal is to work and gain experience in the carpentry work force then achieve my red seal and pursue my career in carpentry. The reason I picked carpentry out of all trades is because I enjoy doing hands on work and being able to rebuild something better than it was before.I took BCIT Level 1 Foundation Program after I graduated early from Centennial Secondary School because I wanted to gain hands-on experience in Carpentry and gain the skills needed to enter the workforce. During this program some of the skills that I have learned are: Using equipment, Safety, Scaffolding, Stairs and other foundational skills in Carpentry. I started working at Cyrus Landscaping 2 years ago. This landscaping job taught me about working in residential areas and how to be professional on the job site. I got to learn how to properly take down and rebuild fences. I also worked renovating stone driveways, which consisted of removing the previous driveway, laying the foundation, and then re-paving the driveway with new pavers. My experience with Cyrus landscaping helped me develop skills like team work, communication, and prepared me to use those skills in a professional workspace. I started working in general contracting during the summer and with the short amount of time working there I can happily say that I learned a lot that can be related to carpentry. One of the main roles I had was painting. I would take a disc sander to walls to make sure they were smooth before priming and painting. In the program at BCIT that I am in we use a lot of disc sanders for the types of projects we do. Another role I had was removing and installing doors. The experience working in contracting helped me also get some great skills like working independently and also working with a team of contractors. Furthermore, the experience I had working with different tools ended up being relevant in my carpentry course at BCIT.I have a certification in first aid and throughout that whole process I was in a program that was called ES Academy and it gave me certifications in first aid and Rock climbing. Seeing this now I am very happy that I got those certifications because in the work space of carpentry there are many injuries and having someone at the jobsite who knows first aid can be very helpful. Rock climbing taught me how to use a rope and do different types of knots that ended up being useful in carpentry because of the need for knots in safety.

  Iworked at this landscaping business for about a year in a half, I mostly worked at this job during the summer time and part time during school. I would learn a lot of new stuff about landscaping, about the tools and how to operate different machines. I would do a lot of driveway renovations and building a lot of wooden fences and doors.
