Undergraduate Student Researcher
I completed a 10-week final year project titled "Defining monocyte, fibroblast and epithelial cell interactions to determine the role of inflammatory monocytes in mediating tissue damage" supervised by Sharee Basdeo. This research involved using human lung epithelial cells and fibroblasts to establish 2D monocultures and co-cultures as well as 3D co-cultures in a Transwell system then stimulating the cultures with recombinant cytokines and conditioned medium from human primary monocytes to mimic inflammatory lung conditions. This research allowed me to develop important research skills and to acquire laboratory skills in various immunological technologies including ELISA and cell culture.
Research Assistant
Part of the PREVENT Dementia study which is a large-scale, international, multi-centre study that aims to establish novel and clinically applicable early biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease, decades before its clinical diagnosis.I was responsible for liaising and collaborating with other members of the team including international partners, communicating with participants, undertaking neuroimaging and psychological assessments of participants, curating large datasets collected from participants, obtaining any missing data and ensuring our records and files are kept up to date.Additionally, I conducted statistical analyses that contribute to the study and present them to the team.
Summer Research Student
I was awarded a Health Research Board (HRB) summer student scholarship for my research project titled "Investigating the relationship between Alzheimer's Disease risk factors, protective lifestyle factors and cognition in midlife" supervised by Lorina Naci. My project will contribute to the PREVENT dementia study.
