Sandra M. Lowe, MD is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai where she is active as a teacher and mentor to students and early career professionals from various behavioral health disciplines. Dr. Lowe serves as Medical Director of the Mount Sinai World Trade Center (WTC) Mental Health Program, the largest WTC Clinical Center of Excellence, serving a diverse cohort of over 23,000 responders. In that role, she leads a large multidisciplinary team of professionals and is responsible for oversight of administrative and clinical operations, including patient care, disease surveillance, program finances and medical network management. Her areas of focus include identifying barriers to care, addressing health care disparities, and guiding programmatic development to increase access to effective, evidence-based treatment. Dr. Lowe has extensive experience in the psychiatric sequelae of trauma exposure, and, since 2010, has cared for WTC responders diagnosed with depression, anxiety disorders and complex PTSD. She has published on 9/11-related cognitive impairment, barriers to care, and management of trauma-related disorders. Dr. Lowe regularly collaborates with NIOSH/CDC leadership to develop standards for mental health care for 9/11 responders and has a prominent role in the development of initiatives to improve service utilization. She contributes to the dissemination of practices relevant to disaster response and works to elevate public awareness of the enduring effects of psychological trauma exposure.
