Joined Motherwell Bridge as Composites TA and spent the last two years plus in development work, designing and manufacturing a system to enable the repair of caissons offshore.As part of a three man team of engineers we took an idea from the Cast In Place Pipe (CIPP) industry, an idea demonstrated in principle to us, by a third party.In addition to Cape providing the necessary R&D budget, a major operator invested by awarding a purchase order for the application of a caisson lining to one of their platforms.We won a first place award from Composites UK for the section Innovation in Design in September 2017, this was for the forthcoming offshore application which was to be successfully carried out in the last quarter of 2017.My job is done and moving on.

Responsible for introducing the composites product into RBG/Stork as a product line in 2012. Worked in the rope access department for 10 years and through my position of obtaining the ad-hoc sales I investigated the obvious requirement for a composite product and after some research decided on an American based supplier.I joined Rigblast to project engineer work down the leg of the Dunlin Alpha, applying wraps, concrete repairs and inspection techniques. Moved on to engineer leg works on Brent Bravo and Charlie. Returned to RBG to carry out sales and project management for the rope access department (SAS). Mentoring the new project engineers and managers before taking up the post of TA for composites.

In charge of the engineering department with several project and hydraulic engineers carrying out all ad-hoc engineering for the company, this included crane work outwith the specialist crane management contracts.I provided technical support to the contract managers with responsibility for stress analysis and structural calculations.I designed a patened lifting apparatus (grAvlift) for a client's use.Responsible for all engineering staff including field engineers.

My duties included the provision of design and technical support for HPL products from Aberdeen base with a particular emphasis on the pipeline weld tester product. Also provided business development , sales and market analysis and subsequent development of new and patented tester based products.Provided design and supervision of detail drawings to support the on-site machining division.It was my responsibility to liaise with overseas authorities and engineers to ensure compliance with their regulations in order to achieve the relative authorisation of the weld tester and associated uses.

Formed and managed a machining company with an opportunity in a wire-line fabrication shop to provide the in-house machining and also to sell subcontract machine services. The company outgrew the allocated shop space in the first year.During this time I designed and manufactured a small vibratory separator unit used as a prototype in the coring industry for the on-line collection of mud samples.After carrying out stress analysis for an existing weld tester design and machining components for the same I moved the machine shop into the tester company's premises. I was contracted to provide manufacturing services for the testers and a sub-contract machining service. I became general manager of the tester company overseeing all aspects of the business including the workshop, service personnel and instrumentation department.Moved the machine shop and teamed with J & S Horn Consultants to develop a multi-schedule weld tester. As part of our machining and design service I carried out inspection and refurbishment of lifting equipment including crane blocks. During this time we designed and manufactured a sub-sea plug used in the Foinaven field.I designed and patented a limited access hot-tapping tool to meet a client's specification.

Formed the company with a colleague to manage a design contract as sold to Alfa-Laval Separation AB with a brief to design and manufacture a prototype shale shaker. During this time I was responsible for conceptual and detail design, stress analysis and mechanics of the machine, initially producing all drawings and later supervising draughtsmen and overseeing machining, fabrication and production in sub-contractor's premises. The prototype shaker eventually had five patent applications covering the various components and features.After the handover of the unit I purchased a fastener company in Aberdeen together with my co-director. I managed the day-to-day operation of this business including the supervision of the machining facility.

I joined Thule United as a project engineer handling product sales and management, including the control of manufacture of special packages of solids control equipment. Dealing mainly with Norwegian customers but also including UK operators.During the slump of '87 I was part of a two-man team tasked to design and develop a new shale shaker to compete with an American design of unit. The resulting shale shaker was the VSM 100. The design incorporated many patented sales features returning Thule to the position of number one in the solids control market. During this intensive period my colleague and I supervised the field-testing of the prototype unit both on land rigs and offshore, incorporating design feedback into the unit. After a period in charge of production I was responsible for R&D of the unit and its screens. In my spare time after working hours I designed and produced a pressure sensitive football fence in the aftermath of Hillsborough. This fence won the Archimedes award through Eureka magazine and was featured on the BBC's Tomorrow's World programme.

I joined this export consultancy to gain commercial and project management experience.Responsible for the purchase and management of export packages of everything form steel to main engines for various designs of ships. All covered in ECGD finance deals for Portuguese shipyards and some Egyptian and South American clients.I supervised a team of three project engineers before leaving to attend Durham University.

Started as a detail draughtsman working on ship and submarine hydraulic equipment for the MOD Navy and foreign navies. Ended up as a design draughtsman producing conceptual and detail designs. Overseeing manufacture of all of the company's product range and supervising detail draughtsmen. Products covered from winches for surface vessels, lifting equipment including davits, windlasses and submersible (first ever) launch /recovery frame to periscope lifting gear for submarines.I designed a patentable fixing to enable recovery winches to connect to helicopters.I attended Bath University studying MSC in Hydraulic Engineering.

Joined BP as an engineering cadet and attended Southampton College of Technology (Solent University) to graduate with an HND Mechanical Engineering (Marine biased). Sailed with the tanker fleet carrying out watch-keeping duties and general maintenance. After graduating I was seconded to Kincaid's of Greenock to spend six months in inspection and as a fitter on Burmeister & Wain diesel engines.
