Project And Development ManagerRogart Ltd. 1995 - Jul 2000AberdeenFormed and managed a machining company with an opportunity in a wire-line fabrication shop to provide the in-house machining and also to sell subcontract machine services. The company outgrew the allocated shop space in the first year.During this time I designed and manufactured a small vibratory separator unit used as a prototype in the coring industry for the on-line collection of mud samples.After carrying out stress analysis for an existing weld tester design and machining components for the same I moved the machine shop into the tester company's premises. I was contracted to provide manufacturing services for the testers and a sub-contract machining service. I became general manager of the tester company overseeing all aspects of the business including the workshop, service personnel and instrumentation department.Moved the machine shop and teamed with J & S Horn Consultants to develop a multi-schedule weld tester. As part of our machining and design service I carried out inspection and refurbishment of lifting equipment including crane blocks. During this time we designed and manufactured a sub-sea plug used in the Foinaven field.I designed and patented a limited access hot-tapping tool to meet a client's specification.

During this time I was responsible for conceptual and detail design, stress analysis and mechanics of the machine, initially producing all drawings and later supervising draughtsmen and overseeing machining, fabrication and production in sub-contractor's premises. The prototype shaker eventually had five patent applications covering the various components and features.After the handover of the unit I purchased a fastener company in Aberdeen together with my co-director. I managed the day-to-day operation of this business including the supervision of the machining facility.

Project / R&D EngineerThule Rigtech 1985 - 1990Aberdeen, United KingdomI joined Thule United as a project engineer handling product sales and management, including the control of manufacture of special packages of solids control equipment. Dealing mainly with Norwegian customers but also including UK operators.During the slump of '87 I was part of a two-man team tasked to design and develop a new shale shaker to compete with an American design of unit. The resulting shale shaker was the VSM 100. The design incorporated many patented sales features returning Thule to the position of number one in the solids control market. During this intensive period my colleague and I supervised the field-testing of the prototype unit both on land rigs and offshore, incorporating design feedback into the unit. After a period in charge of production I was responsible for R&D of the unit and its screens. In my spare time after working hours I designed and produced a pressure sensitive football fence in the aftermath of Hillsborough. This fence won the Archimedes award through Eureka magazine and was featured on the BBC's Tomorrow's World programme.
