I started my career as a professional athlete playing handball. In addition to playing in the European leagues, I also represented my home country of Austria at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. After my highly successful sporting career, I got my masters degree in Natural Language Processing and went on to a technical role at Sony Ericsson. With a focus on sysadmin and telco, I honed an agile, team based approach to work as early as 2003, all whilst zooming around Copenhagen, Stockholm and Amsterdam. My third career as an Agile Coach began after moving to New Zealand in 2007 when I co-founded Nomad8 and started working with companies to inject my own unique flavour and style of Agile. I have coached and consulted to a range of impressive companies like Trade Me, Snapper and Southern Cross Health. My repertoire includes coaching technical teams, executive teams and whole organisations. In addition to every flavour of agile you can imagine I have coached teams and companies on things like Holocracy, high performance teams and Business Agility. I have been a keynote speaker at some of the biggest Agile (and non-Agile!) conferences in the world. I have delivered the keynote address at Agile Montreal, Agile Brazil and am a constant feature at Agile Australia and the Agile Alliance conferences in the US. In 2015 I authored my first book 'Creating Great Teams', co-authored with my Nomad8 colleague David Mole on the subject of high performing Agile teams and self-selection.

Agile Coach (Via Nomad8)Southern Cross Healthcare Ltd Jan 2020 - Jan 2024Auckland, New ZealandI introduced agile ways of working to an innovation partnership programme between Southern Cross Healthcare and Orion Health. This collaboration between a private hospital and a vendor focused on developing an electronic patient record system. Forming a mixed team from both organisations, we worked in a space adjacent to the hospital, facilitating daily interactions with the nursing staff, the end users of the system. This close proximity facilitated invaluable real-time feedback, allowing for rapid and agile adaptation to their needs. This hands-on approach not only streamlined the development process but also ensured the delivery of a user-centric and efficient solution. My role was to teach, coach and mentor the programme in customer-centric, agile ways of collaborating. -

Sociocracy And Holacracy Coach (Via Nomad8)Snapper Services Limited Nov 2016 - Aug 2018Wellington & Wairarapa, New ZealandAt Snapper there is a culture of collaboration and respect, and a true passion for transport. People are respected and in control of how they work. But in 2016 the company had an eye on the future and knew there were opportunities ahead. They were drawn to Holacracy by its promise of better collaboration. Radical transparency, decision making at the right level, baked-in continuous improvement and dynamic organisation all seemed right. My job was to make it happen. My experiences have been published in Agile Today (AUS): http://www.agiletoday.com.au/decentralising-leadership/ -
Agile Enterprise Coach (Via Nomad8)Trade Me Feb 2013 - Sep 2016Wellington & Auckland, New ZealandI led a company wide Agile transformation at Trade Me, New Zealand’s biggest eCommerce provider that accounts for two thirds of New Zealand's domestic internet traffic. Trade Me has grown to more than 450 people over the past three years and while quick growth was a consequence of past success and is a pre-cursor to continued success it also made it more difficult to co-ordinate across the organisation and have everyone pull in the same direction. When I started with Trade Me Agile was fledgling, but not new for them. Their problem wasn’t lack of knowledge or mindset but rather one of scaling and implementation. We started by introducing Portfolio Kanban to reduce the number of projects in progress and to make sure we would work on the most important things first. We then introduced stable, cross-functional teams (squads) that were product rather than project specific; we were inspired in our approach to scaling Agile by Spotify’s ideas of autonomous squads that work as lean mini-startups. Like Spotify we structured our work around squads, tribes and chapters. We have most recently been developing a process for self selection of people into squads across the organisation. -
Agile Enterprise Coach (Via Nomad8)Snapper Services Limited Dec 2010 - Jan 2012WellingtonSnapper decided they wanted to change the way they developed applications. Scrum and Agile seemed like a good fit and Snapper hired me to help them understand what Agile is, assess their skills and tailor a specific programme for them. We started with the selection of a development team, product owner and an appropriate pilot project. The pilot project’s purpose was to deliver a customer service application that would allow for remote support of Snapper customers, which was needed for Snapper’s go-live in the Auckland market six months later. Aside from teaching the mechanics of Scrum and Kanban, my main areas of focus were building a productive delivery team, integrating product develpment and innovation, and instilling lasting attitude and behaviour changes that encompass Agile values. I achieved this though team, business and one-on-one coaching, predominantly with the Scrum Master and Product Owners. Once the team had mastered the basics of Scrum, most of my time was spent pairing up with the Scrum Master to bring her up to the position where she could take over coaching the team towards continuous improvement. The team successfully delivered multiple projects and launched new products and Snapper has achieved lasting change in their development process. I am now working with other parts of the organisation, predominantly product, to spread and repeat the success of the initial Scrum team. -
