I was lucky to get the opportunity to combine a few elements of my final project with an internship at Happen. I researched ‘cleanliness within the home’ in Mumbai, India. This involved shadowing different people and observing their cleanliness habits, preparing questionnaires, taking photos and videos to illustrate varied lifestyles in Mumbai and using word association to better understand children’s perception of cleanliness. I summarized my findings in the form of a report and a presentation.• Classified focus groups, compiled questionnaires and developed innovative techniques for research that not only gave a critical insight on personal hygiene but also provided an understanding of people’s lifestyles• Created an engaging presentation using tools like storyboards, information graphics and research snapshots to present insights of the research, helping the client achieve a very thorough understanding of the market

After training with a Tokyo-based Japanese design firm, I was part of the founding team of it’s subsidiary in Mumbai. This was a challenging assignment. We set up operations from scratch and my role was not limited to design. We set up an office, contacted prospective clients, made our sales pitch and did a bit of client servicing and, of course, designing. Because we were a small firm I learnt the value of being a good team player, being flexible about my job and working on exciting design tasks. We were expected to draw on Japanese design principles and apply them in an Indian context.• Co-designed a one of its kind travel diary ‘Been There Done That’ - a product that won the prestigious Good Design Award, Tokyo, 2010• Directed two significant publication projects (Japan Book, Been There Done That for kids), successfully leading the projects from conceptualization to its finality• Assisted as the in-house photographer for advertisements and other design projects, adding value to the services Bascos offered and enhanced client communication• Directed the interior design & planning team to plan the office space in Mumbai, ensuring a safe yet exciting working space for Team Bascos

I was one among three candidates selected to train with Bascos after a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Arts, from University of Mumbai. We had the opportunity to shadow senior designers, study how the design process works and learn about Japanese culture. It was a very hands-on role. I had to be flexible and willing to take on different tasks. It was a rewarding experience to live and work in Tokyo for over four months.
