I trained at Christian Medical College Vellore and have concentrated on my special interest in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery since 1991. I had the good fortune to work with eminent HPB surgeons in India and abroad including Prof Imrie (Glasgow), Prof IS Benjamin (Kings College London), Prof ST Fan (Hong Kong), Prof Makuuchi (Tokyo) and Prof Tanaka (Kyoto) as well as Profs Prakash Khanduri, Banerjee Jesudasan and V Sitaram in CMC Hospital. After leaving CMC I worked in Bangalore where I had the opportunity to develop my interest and was able to do the first succesful adult live donor liver transplant, the first laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy , the first ante-situm liver autotransplant, and the first laparoscopic liver resection in cirrhotic in Karnataka. My interests included Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma resection and pancreaticoduodenectomy and have published on these topics. I have been an active member in the IASG and the IHPBA. I am interested in helping surgeons in peripheral hospitals provide good HPB care in their own communities and have travelled to a number of such hospitals to perform and assist at operations such as pancreaticoduodenectomy and liver resection.I had the opportunity to work in Global Hospital Chennai with Prof Rela and his team for 3 years where I learned a great deal about liver transplantation and published a number of papers in international journals. I moved back to Bangalore to lead the liver surgery and transplantation programme in Global Hospital Bangalore and rejoin my family. Personal circumstances resulted in my taking up the opportunity to join an evolving liver transplant programme in Manipal Hospital.The Manipal Liver Transplant programme functions as a hub and spoke model with programmes running in Bangalore, Mangalore, Salem, Madurai and Vijaywada at present. Additional programmes are shortly starting in Goa, Jaipur as well as Sri Lanka & Malaysia.
