I acutely remember at eleven years old being told one November evening I had type one diabetes. As I spent the next week hospitalized and being educated, I relized that not one person who was providing me with such life altering information, could really relate. Not one person on my medical team had diabetes. That realization began my interest of helping others with diabetes live and thrive with their diagnosis. I am passionate about helping others with diabetes understand their diagnosis, treatment plans, needed life style changes, and ways to cope and ultimately thrive. I find energy and joy in connecting to an individual and helping them create the best care plan that will fit their personal and financial constraints as well as motivation levels. I find my own diabetes diagnosis along with use of motivational interviewing, allow me to connect on a different level with a patient living with diabetes than an educator who does not live with diabetes. I began my career in nursing as a resource nurse working at Atrium Health Main; Charlotte, North Carolina's largest hospital. There I was able to care for a large variety of patients, many of whom also had diabetes. During my time as a resource nurse, I also spent nearly two years working on contract with the hospital's Diabetes Education Department. After the birth of my first daughter and over 10 years as a resource nurse, I took a part time position on a mother baby unit. Due to my varied experience, I better understand the effects of diabetes in nearly every type of patient population. I feel this has only made me stronger as a Certified Diabetes Educator. I continue to fill in with the Diabetes Education Department as they have needs for a Diabetes Educator. I am seeking a part time, work from home position providing education to patients living with diabetes. I am a self starter and complete tasks in a timely manner.
