I began my career in healthcare in the late 90’s as a paramedic working in a variety of different urban and suburban locales – Ann Arbor, MI; Oakland, CA; and ultimately Denver, CO. While I love patient care, I longed to make a bigger impact than what I could one patient at a time as a care provider. This led me to complete my MSPH at the University of Colorado in 2004. In joining Kaiser Permanente Colorado in 2003 as the manager for their EMS team, I discovered a world far broader than the back of an ambulance. I have had the privilege over my tenure at KPCO to work overseeing a wide variety of programs, including a 24/7 RN advice team, hospital medicine services, emergency medicine Advanced Practice Provider staff as well as EMT’s in our virtual venue management center. The advent of EPIC as the Kaiser Permanente EMR of choice in 2004 opened up new worlds of technology to improve the care that we provided to our members and improve the efficiency and workflow of both our providers and front line staff. During the nearly two decades I spent at KPCO, I worked on numerous technology projects that helped to bridge the gap in care information that often existed between outside organizations and our internal care delivery system. Two recent projects have brought significant improvements to the ability to track of our patients as well as provide virtual care to our members where they live, work and play.The implementation of a “Virtual Hospital” within the EPIC framework allowed our virtual venue management team to track members 24/7 in real time, literally as the member checked into a hospital or emergency room. The “Chat with a Doctor” program, which debuted in late 2016, has now completed over a quarter of a million chats and allows KPCO members to reach a physician in real time at their convenience. This program literally puts a ‘doc in your pocket’ to address medical questions and concerns and allows for treatment to occur virtually, saving the patient time and money and providing peace of mind.My passion centers around making the healthcare system easy and simple for patients to navigate to get the care appropriate for their needs in the right place at the right time. Whether that is ensuring a patient in an outside hospital gets appropriate and timely follow up or a member can have their medical condition treated virtually in the comfort of their own home, helping patients have a seamless and barrier free care experience is beyond rewarding. When we make it easy for patients to get the right care at the right time, everyone thrives.
